Every city where we have lived has had a Greek church that once a year puts on a Greek festival offering delicious Greek food, products and some traditional folk dancing. The festival put on by St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church this past weekend was one of the best we have been to. It was a very well-attended event, and despite the large crowd, everything ran very smoothly, and the volunteers were all very friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed the lively atmosphere with music and dancing, but the reason we really came was for some home-cooked Greek food and we were not disappointed. Everything we tried was delicious! The spanakopita was generously-sized and very tasty. The tyropitakia, similar to spanakopita but made with only cheese, was also scrumptious. The dolmathes, grape leaves with rice and meat filling, were really good. We also tried the pastitsio dinner. Pastitsio is like a Greek-style lasagna. It’s made with long macaroni, ground meat and béchamel sauce. This one was excellent and came with Greek salad, green beans and a roll.
The only cloud on this enjoyable experience was that they were all sold out of pastries. We came on Sunday afternoon, the last day of a three-day event. So if you want baklava or other pastries, make sure you come early. We will be sure to do...
Read moreEveryone I met here was very kind and welcoming, just what I expected from a Greek Orthodox church. The sanctuary was beautiful as well as its icons. For those wanting to visit this church, the divine liturgy is mostly in Greek, but they have books so you can follow along. The fellowship hall was busy with quite a bit of noise, but that's expected from a lively church such as this one. If your new to Orthodoxy I suggest looking up a basic tutorial before you go as it is so different from other churches. I recommend "12 Things I Wish I Knew Before Going To An Orthodox Church". It's a short pamphlet, but hits all the right points. Thank you for being...
Read moreWe had the most wonderful time at the festival as we always do.Such great energy, food and dancing. WE were very disappointed though to arrive before 5 pm on Saturday and find that there was no spanakopita and there would be no more until the next day. With the entire rest of Sat. eve ahead it seemed odd.We also missed out on baklava. So, we know everyone is working so hard with the food and that it is hard to predict numbers but these two foods seem to be extreme favorites so we will hope for next year. Thank yu all for a...
