Read moreI cannot recommend this museum enough!
The woman who greeted me at the door (who I sadly/rudely never got the name of), enthusiastically led me through thw museum giving me an extremely informative, and interesting, tour. I mentioned I had a short amount of time, and she did a fantastic job, pointing at the highlights, and going into greater details when I showed additional interest.
My favorite information that I learned about was the progression of how the sponge industry in Tarpon Springs came to be, how the initial Greek immigrants were brought over through a friendship between businessmen, and all the ties this place has with pop culture in America as a whole (greek potato salad was invented here!).
I was floored to learn that the woman who helped me was a volunteer. She was born and raised in Tarpon Springs, and clearly had a love for her town. I could not believe that this was a free museum, and wish I had several hours to go through every detail. A bonus - they have a cute little gift shop corner, I bought a couple of cool photos of the town for only $8!
Please make sure to stop by here before you make your way down to the sponge docks. You...
Read moreWhat a gem this little museum is, tucked in downtown Tarpon Springs by the Pinellas Trail…of course, because that was a former railroad and this museum is housed in an old rail depot. There is a volunteer interpreter when you come in who will get you acquainted with the first room, the former ticket and registration area. And then you are free to wander through the other back rooms as well, that capture the rich history of this area. From the agriculture to the sponge diving trade, Tarpon Springs had a lot going for it over the years. And some wealthy patrons to help it along the way, as well as a hard working citizenship who also sent their young men off to the World Wars. Admission is free but do the right thing and drop a few dollars in the donation box, and make a purchase or two in the gift shop. I will be back because there is so...
