I am writing about an incident at the Stop & Shop in Teaneck around 6:30 PM. I often shop there with my kids. Typically, I pick them up from school, and we go there to buy fruit and vegetables.
On this day, I went to the self-checkout register with my two kids. We began scanning our items, but the machine started beeping—this happened three or four times. It wasn’t my fault; the scanner kept malfunctioning.
A store employee, Robin, was standing nearby. She approached me and said, in a loud and bossy tone, that I had too many items and needed to go to a cashier. Her tone made me feel very uncomfortable. I told her I was almost done and couldn’t start over again. I said, “All I need is your help, not to be told to leave the self-checkout.”
My kids became worried and frightened. Robin didn’t assist me and even instructed another employee, Jamir, not to help me either. He followed her instructions and refused to help with the beeping machine. Instead, he told me to leave the store.
I explained that I had spent a lot of time selecting those items, and now they were refusing to assist me and asking me to leave. I’ve never been treated like this in any other store. I regularly use self-checkout at Whole Foods and elsewhere without issues.
I stood in front of the machine, overwhelmed, and started crying. That’s when another employee, whose name starts with "M" (I believe it’s Marlene), noticed how upset I was. She came over and kindly offered to help.
I approached Robin to ask for her name, but she refused to tell me. I had to read it from her badge. At that moment, I saw Jamir mumbling something and giving me an intimidating look. I felt harassed and scared. Thankfully, Marlene helped me scan the rest of my items. Her kindness brought a smile to my kids’ faces. I truly appreciate her support.
Unfortunately, because of the way Robin and Jamir treated me, I don’t feel comfortable shopping at that store anymore. They watched me closely until I left the store, which made me feel even more uncomfortable. This experience was...
Read moreClean, fairly well stocked most of time but there is a big push of their store brand with other brands phased out at times. Sometimes the store brand is acceptable to me and sometimes it is not equal to the name brand. Produce variety good for average sized market, but produce quality sometimes less than ideal. I LOVE the hand held self scan option because I can handle my groceries once and bag them in the cart (this is the main reason I shop at this store) but sometimes the scanners freeze and I have to get a new one in the middle of shopping. That happened twice today. Very frustrating. Preventative maintenance would make sense. Most staff are helpful and some are very nice. This store now offers online ordering with curbside pickup. 10/7/2022-The scanners seem to be working much better now. I haven't had one freeze up in a couple of months. Thank you Stop & Shop! 11 /9/2023-The scanners are still working fine. I guess Stop & Shop listens to its customers. 2/6/2024-I noticed some loose onions and potatoes appeared to have mold in them on a recent visit. I told a manager, who seemed to care. I returned about 2 days later and the same potatoes and onions were on the shelf. I returned again a couple weeks after that, and new potatoes and onions were out. Some of them also appeared to have mold on them (See pictures below. If you zoom in you can see the issue I am referring to). I didn't tell anybody the last 2 times because they don't seem to care, in my humble opinion. I've deducted a star from my previous reviews because of the ongoing produce issue, and because of a VERY uncomfortable issue I had with a supervisor (9/2024 - recently promited to a managerial position) my last visit that is way too long and crazy to...
Read moreStop & Shop is one of the grocery stores at which I can purchase, under a benefit of my Medicare replacement health insurance policy, healthy food items, O-T-C medicines and such for free, up to a total of $75 per quarter. Different insurance companies might have a different set of items that are eligible. Items like V-8 but not cookies might be a simple example of a range of items purchasable under such plans - check with your insurance company. This store at American Legion Drive in Teaneck, NJ has a large, usually non-hectic parking lot, and is off the main streets of Cedar Lane and a few blocks from River Road (take North Street east for maybe 3 stop signs). The store always seems to run smoothly and from my experiences there, the customer service people are very helpful. You can get lottery tickets. I am not sure if they still sell cigarettes because I don't ever think about cigarettes anymore. I quit smoking after 44 years, in 1 day at home, 11 years ago after a week stay in the hospital for breathing problems; my lungs have fully recovered. I suggest you quit smoking, it will likely be the best decision of your life. As most large grocery chains, this store has the full set of food items, including a bake...
