This was a small, local Long Island theater. My friends and I went to watch the Beauty and the Beast production. It was pretty awesome. Hana Culbreath was a breath of fresh air and really did justice to Belle's character. But my favorite of the bunch would have to be Elliott Litherland as Gaston. He was the unanimous favorite. The smaller theater made for a more intimate setting which was great.
Although there were a lot of positives that came from the performance, I would say that was dampened and truly overshadowed by the rude and unprofessional ushers that were situated by me. We were seated in the orchestra, section K seats 14-18. I get it, the ushers do have a job to perform. But the ushers today (11/27/2022 for the 2PM show) were downright disrespectful. Several people were asked to turn their phones off though ours were already on silent. The three ushers (a young man and 2 old women) circled that one side of the theater in the last 2 sections and POLICED the few that they saw on their celphones. Now there is absolutely nothing wrong with policing and enforcing celphone usage during a show however my issue with them is that their conversations were so loud and right over me that they basically drowned the music that was playing. One woman with the bob clapped obnoxiously loud as though to stimulate a much louder applaud for the cast. She did this multiple times. We, as patrons, came to watch the performance and not to be hovered over by ushers who acted no less than vultures. And if you were going to be fair to everyone, they should have checked a little better because the people in the middle of the aisle took videos of the performance.
Argyle Theater, you guys have to do a little better when it comes to your staff. Our experience at this particular show was marred by the constant interruption of your unprofessional ushers. As much as we would like to see other productions, this may very well be one of the last we see at...
Read moreThe Argyle Theatre is an absolute GEM, and a new, very exciting additional to the cultural landscape on Long Island. We have now seen both the iconic and well-known musical “Hairspray”, and the much more complex and thoroughly enjoyable recent Broadway hit, “Peter and the Starcatcher”. Both productions were SUPERB, and that is saying a lot, since particularly since “Peter” is an exceptionally demanding show for the actors, both in terms of the very witty and cerebral dialogue, and the fabulous choreography, which demands that the actors create the appearance of sinking ships, drowning seafarers, and hilarious mermaids. Without exception, the performers in both shows were top-notch, Broadway-quality stage performers. As for the theatre itself, it is a thoroughly renovated and exceptionally comfortable space, and all seats, both in the orchestra and balcony, have great sightlines. The staging, lighting and costumes are all top-notch and highly imaginative. We were accompanied to both shows by our daughter (who is a veteran of many high school and college live theatre productions) and our nine year old granddaughter, and we all had a great time at both shows. We intend to see every show that the Argyle puts on in their ambitious and varied six-shows-a-year schedule, and we became INSTANT season ticket holders at the intermission of out very first show at the Argyle. In a word :...
Read moreWe have been coming to the Argyle Theatre for years, and it never disappoints. The quality of the productions is consistently outstanding. Acting, direction, staging, and music are all thoughtfully done and professionally executed. This past weekend we saw Fiddler on the Roof and were completely blown away. Every detail was beautifully handled, from the casting to the set design.
We live west of Babylon, closer to the city, but we are always glad to make the trip east to see a show at the Argyle. The experience is always worth it. The theater offers professional talent in a setting that feels intimate without being small. This is a true gem on Long Island.
The seats are roomy and comfortable. Ticket prices are reasonable: the best seats are a fraction of what you would pay on Broadway. The Argyle appears committed to making high-quality theater accessible to the community.
Parking is plentiful. Staff are friendly. Concessions include beer, wine, cocktails, soda, and snacks.
We will be back for the next production, but if you happen to be reading this while Fiddler is still running, do yourself a favor and...
