Knocked out Saranac Ultra 6 today for Skyrunner 6/8. Finished with 10:41 elapsed time and 8:48 total time, so about 2 hours of driving and wasting time with transitions. Did it solo, but having a driver would have been pretty nice time wise. Weather was gorgeous so had to take full advantage of it. Started out strong on Haystack/Mckenzie. McKenzie is a mess with the blowdowns and mud. Good luck following a trail. It’s a pick your own adventure for a lot of the sections in the steep parts. Definitely the most difficult part of the day in terms of terrain. Scarface was next. Trail is honestly great, the pine needles covering the trail made for nice soft running. Unfortunately it also covers roots and I ate it hard twice in 5 minutes on my way down. Bruised and scratched me up pretty good as I was jogging along fairly quickly. Fought the knee pain and swelling for the rest of the day. Not fun. The top section is a little overgrown so be prepared to push through some branches here and there. There is a whole bunch of wood staged at the bridge for the rebuild, I think someone said work begins in August. Ampersand was pretty busy. Had to park on the road. It’s quite a drop off the road onto the shoulder. Trail was a little wet in places but nothing unavoidable. Knees started acting up from all the descent impact. Started Saint Regis at 7:00 on the clock. Trail is good condition. Pace slowed massively. Miles started adding up. Great views on top. Finished with Baker from the green. Dry trail. Finished in town and gave the bell some good rings. Overall a pretty cool hike. It’s definitely the most unique of the NEU8 and I really enjoyed it, minus tripping and resulting knee issues. The views from Saint Regis and Ampersand were phenomenal, honestly better than a lot of the 46ers. Podcasts of choice for the day were Stuff You Should Know and...
