We stayed two nights in September, and it was nice to see the restored condition of this Saranac Lake landmark - one I know quite well. As a youngster I walked through the lobby thousands of times as it was a shortcut we took when we got out of school. Mrs. Ryan's News Stand in the lobby was a favorite stop for after-school candy if you could rub a few nickels together. Back in the day, the hotel was run by students from nearby Paul Smith's College who were in the Hospitality program there and they served a dinner buffet once a week and an VERY affordable price. The hotel was restored in 2018. ||The lobby is in great shape, and the Campfire Restaurant is a lovely place. The staff is extremely friendly - they couldn't do enough for you. Upon checking in we were told they saved a room for us on the 6th floor - it was small but had one of the best views of Lake Flower. The room was small (which, I think is fairly common at this hotel since it was built in 1927) and the view was nothing to write home about. Our biggest complaint about the room was that no matter what we did, the temperature stayed at 75 degrees which is at least 5 degrees warmer than we like it. We turned the AC on high, the fan on high - opened the window, it didn't matter. ||The Campfire Restaurant on the property is beautiful and they have a great menu with a variety of food options. I've seen a few copies on line and am lead to believe that Chef rotates dishes in and out based on the season and availability of mostly local sourced food products. ||We sat at the bar, and cocktails were excellent. Although we didn't try it, one of the drink selections is the "HOT SARA", a throwback to a time when the large sign on the roof advertising the HOTEL SARANAC had some issues. The last 2 letters of HOTEL and the last 3 letters of SARANAC stopped working. ||We shared the Tucker Potato Chips which was a dip consisting of pistachio, artichoke and feta whipped yogurt. It was served with house made potato chips made from potatoes from a local farm and some crackers. The dip and chips were fantastic. One type of cracker served with the dip was seasoned rather heavily with cumin. YUCK! Not a fan. My wife had the Green Salad with the Sugarmaker Salmon on top without the glaze they normally put on top. She loved it. Our only complaint was that the bar staff had a terrible time finding the Yankees/Red Sox game on the TV. C'mon people ... I might be a Sox fan, but this is Yankee country as far back as I can remember. ||Our server was an encyclopedia. If you asked about a dish, he could spout off every ingredient with zero hesitation, and was excellent at making recommendation if you asked. Once again, he could rattle off the ingredients and how something was prepared -- no hesitation, no notes. You don't run into this kind of menu expertise very often in my experience. Blew me away! ||The hotel has ample parking in their own lot right next to the hotel. There was a wedding there the weekend we stayed, and still we never had to hunt for a parking spot. It is a great location right in the heart of town, and is within walking distance of several restaurants and shops. We hit the Blue Moon Cafe both mornings. It's a great little spot that features a lot of homemade baked goods, breakfast plates and good coffee. It appears to be a favorite of locals and travelers. ||All in all, we enjoyed our stay. We just wish the room was a little larger and there was better...
Read moreOn August 15th our family stayed at Saranac Hotel, in Saranac Lake. We stayed there overnight. After we checked in, we picked up our luggage and walked to the elevator. To our suprise the elevator had a sign that read out or order. I am 75, my luggage is heavy, and I was staring at a long stairwell. But I was more disapointed that the clerk who had checked us in had not warned us, or offered help. We freshened up, and got ready to walk the beautiful town and have dinner. Knowing that the elevator was not working, I took the heavy things out of my purse. One of the things I removed was a jewlry box that contained the dear pearl necklace my beloved husband had given to me the year after we got married. When I travel, I have always carried them in my purse, because I did not trust putting them in my luggage.I placed the jewlry box on the coffee table. After taking the stairs, I went to the man who had checked us in and asked him why he had not warned us bout the elevator and he stated he was too busy. No apology. The following morning we had breakfast and left the hotel and continued our travels on our way to a beautiful place called The Point. When we arrived there, I discovered I had left my pearls on the coffee table. I immediately called the Seranac Hotel and the circumlocation begin: 1 hotel connected me to housekeeping manager. I explained and he said he would check with person who had just cleaned our room and would call me back. 2 after a few hours I called back and he had alredy left. He hever contacted me that day. I asked to speak to hotel manager, and was told there would be a new manager on Monday. Called on Monday, and left a message on voicemail for the new manager. 5 I called him several days and nothing. 6 Housekeeping manager called me and saied they had found nothing. 7 I returned back home in Texas and called manager and he never returned my calls, 8 I called police department and the lady I spoke to said someone would be calling me back. It never happened
My intentions were to give the pearl necklace to my granddaughter who was with us on this trip. My heart was broken, but equally frustrating was the incompetent people that the Hotel Seranac and the police...
Read moreOn a whim, my wife and I decided to forgo our usual lodging in Lake Placid for an overnight trip and try out the newly remodeled Hotel Saranac. From the moment we booked our room over the phone (after having issues with the website), the hospitality and service was wonderful. Every hotel employee was friendly and willing to answer questions and help out.
The hotel is a large building in the middle of small Saranac Lake. You can see it from most areas of the village thanks to the large, illuminated "Hotel Saranac" sign on the roof.
Upon walking into the hotel, it exudes an old school elegance. I never stayed at the hotel prior to the remodel, but you can tell a lot of TLC was put into this restoration. My wife and I especially enjoyed the old-school looking elevator doors and the mailbox chutes.
Our room was a King Deluxe, situated in one of the corners of the building. The room was spacious for an older hotel, and it left plenty of space for us to set up a travel crib for our 18 month old. I loved the retro touches in the room, and, most importantly, it felt very clean.
The bathroom, while serviceable, was a bit on the small side, featuring a nice waterfall shower head with a strangely confounding operational design.
We also had a chance to check out the Camp Fire Restaurant downstairs, and we really enjoyed it. There is a lot of good comfort food to be had there. Additionally, the second floor features a beautiful bar and patio.
One peculiar thing that we noticed is that almost every single window of the hotel had at least three large spiders on the outside (thankfully). Even while eating at the downstairs restaurant, my wife and I were mesmerized by the number of large spiders weaving intricate webs in the windows. Just a strange (and stray) observation.
Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Saranac, and would gladly consider staying there again when we are back in the area. Saranac Lake is a neat little town, and I hope that the newly renovated hotel draws more guests and continues the revitalization...
