mo·nop·o·ly /məˈnäpəlē/ noun the exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.
Optimum Internet is without a doubt the worst internet service provider in history, and it's no surprise that customers are frustrated with the lack of alternatives. Every day, there is a long line of people waiting outside in the freezing cold or blistering heat, and even when you do finally sign up for a plan, the experience only gets worse.
A technician came and said I have a problem with my slow internet after calling multiple times and having optimum blame me and repeatedly pretending restarting my modem and router would fix everything. They said they would send someone to fix the internet the next day, no one came. Week later, someone comes out of the blue unannounced and within five minutes of arrival disconnects our internet without warning. They also wandered through my yard and used my ladder.
Trying to sign up for the 1gb plan is an exercise in frustration, as Optimum often claims that it's not available, and the pricing online is deceiving. Living in Southampton, there are no other options, and Optimum knows it. They take advantage of their monopoly status by adding random charges and increasing prices with impunity.
To make matters worse, Optimum never sends any notifications when they shut down your service, which they seem to do frequently and without warning. It's not uncommon to experience outages several times a month, and even when the service is working, the speeds are abysmal.
Calling customer service is a nightmare, as you're often transferred multiple times before you can even speak to someone who can help. And even then, there's no guarantee that your issue will be resolved.
It's no wonder that customers are fed up and calling for another company to break up this monopoly of bad service. Optimum's robot voice line is unhelpful and often just tells you there will be an outage in your area with no explanation.
Furthermore, Optimum's prices are exorbitant, especially considering the poor quality of service they provide. Customers are paying $82.49 per month for just 300mbps internet, while others nationwide are paying $50 for 1gbps internet. Optimum could charge $500 a month, and customers would still have to pay since there are no other options.
To add insult to injury, Optimum offers discounts and deals online but often raises prices without notification or explanation. The automated voice system is useless, and when you try to contact customer service through chat, you're directed to call instead. It's reminiscent of the experience that South Park parodied with cable companies, and it seems that Optimum takes pleasure in torturing their customers.
In conclusion, Optimum Internet is the worst service provider in history. The lack of alternatives and the company's monopoly status allow them to get away with terrible service, exorbitant prices, and frequent outages. Customers deserve better, and it's time for another company to step in and break up this monopoly.
6/17 Update after previous issues
When I pressed for a resolution, all they suggested was upgrading my plan. Seriously? I was already paying for 300 Mbps at a ridiculous $66 a month, and they wanted me to upgrade?
Here's the kicker: I discovered that they offer a fiber plan with double the speed for less money than what I'm currently paying. How does that even make sense? Why wasn't I informed of this sooner? It feels like this company is deliberately misleading its customers and providing inferior service at a premium price.
I have to wait an entire week for them to come back and supposedly install new equipment, even though their own website says Fiber internet is not available in my area, the customer service person likely was trying to get the most money out of me (saying that I would save money by moving my phone plan to theirs which would actually increase my bill by $40.00 a month). I am guessing that they offer Fiber for cheap and then raise the price without telling you by 20, 40...
Read moreover billing, outages, mutliple layers to try and recitfy a problem the absolute worst service stay away! do whatever else you can don't use them you will be sorry . over billing and never rectified no customer service, no responses STAY AWAY!!! To add since I cannot reply directly to the response .. you have had ample time and space to respond this has literally gone on for a month now! First with technicians failing to show up, then you canceling my service without approval to inability to reconnect me for 5 days which led to the final cancellation and return of all your equipment to you being unable to track down the returned equipment handed in person to your own service technician to then trying to bill me for it to then charging me for a month's service under a new billing with service I never asked for nor ordered or approved or could even use since I turned in my modem and all boxes so I was not even able to access said account to me being on the phone with no less than 8 people so far to have my account settled and all charges removed. If suffolk county had another provider, which I will now make my life's mission I would use them and alert all to follow. There is a growing group of people and I aim to spear head for a class action suit and to press our town officials to insist on competition even if I have to bring the FCC and other federal agencies into it . there is NO reason for your lack of service, incompetence and over billing and erroneous billing !!!...
