Last I saw the Beach, it was 2010. I give it four stars based on what I remember. It was a serene little oasis in the middle of the Towson University campus, surrounded by buildings on all sides. Specifically, it was surrounded by Cook Library, the Center or Science and Math, Lecture Hall, and Linthicum Hall. It was essentially a grassy knoll on which students would gather between classes to relax. Trees added to the atmosphere. There were always a few squirrels, and even the rare rabbit.
The best part about the Beach was that it was secluded from the heavy traffic of the road. (I had heard that part of the campus reconstruction plans was to do away with the Beach as we knew it and replace it with a grassy area alongside the road, thereby increasing the number of students that drivers would see. This absurd idea, if put into effect, would surely gather only one star, for whenever drivers can see students from the road, students can likewise see and hear cars from the area they might otherwise lounge upon, thereby decreasing their desire to lounge there by destroying the pleasant atmosphere.)
My fondest memory of the Beach was seeing a squirrel one very early morning with a full slice of pizza it had found. Exiting Linthicum Hall, I saw a squirrel near the trashcan either trying to eat or drag a slice of pizza. No other students were around on campus yet, and I wanted a closer look. But, as I tried to get closer, I sensed that the squirrel had perhaps become a bit frightened. The last thing I had wanted was for the squirrel to run off without its pizza, for I had felt that this particular squirrel had earned this pizza, and I wanted it to have the opportunity to reap its reward. So, I resolved to only observe the...
