From the beginning to the end, we were blown away by a fantastic stay at the Delamar, making us feel we'd been whisked away to a tropical resort. To start, Becky checked us in, making us feel comfortable first away. Complimentary sparkling wine took the edge off the long drive and Becky helpfully explained all the amenities, hours, etc.
The hotel boasts two beautiful pools: indoor and outdoor. Indoor has fun paper lantern like balls on the ceiling and a green wall with 3D plants coming out. Also has a hot tub sharing a wall with pool so I could talk with hubby while I was swimming and he was in hot tub. Outdoor has lights strung on top with changing colors in the water and cabanas (first come first serve). Both open until 11p.
The artisan restaurant is a bit pricey and fancy so we didn't try it, opting for brewpubs in town.
Three tiers of rooms. Standard looks over parking lot and might see some of the lake. Pool overlooks the pool area which is very pretty. Our room had bay view so we could watch the waves. Although the sound barrier is incredible. We couldn't hear the water but also didn't have to hear the construction at all despite it being on the street on the front of the hotel! I'm typically very bothered by noise and could hear nothing at all, not even other hotel guests through the walls. However, the HVAC system seemed to always be on so the fan seemed constant. My husband loved the white noise. I didn't like the noise nor did I like the fan blowing on me constantly at night. The sink is deep in the bathroom, allowing for easy water bottle filling. And the soap is luxurious , so I didn't need to use lotion after wards. Shower pressure is decent. Walk in shower.
Breakfast is complimentary and designed as a grab and go. I'd rather have had the option of reusable silverware, coffee mug , plates etc. but everything was disposable. It also meant that , at least during the week when we were there, the selection of food was minimal. Although more options would have been nice, the items provided were delicious. The granola was our favorite. There was no 2% milk nor skim but there was whole milk as well as oat. I poured the milk into a paper cup, added granola, to make cereal. Fruit was plentiful and fresh. Croissants were good although I thought the vegan muffin was too dense. Coffee was well brewed albeit a bit bitter for my preference. My husband said the hot water tasted like coffee so it was hard for him to make his green tea in the morning. The staff were courteous and constantly refilling everything.
Our favorite aspects of the hotel were the myriad of different places to chill. The main lounge had a gas fireplace, complimentary board games, tables, couches etc. but there were also chairs and tables scattered in hallways and nooks so there was always somewhere to relax. Outside there were two main areas to relax, in addition to the bar area complete with bocce ball. Both areas had a lovely view of the sunset over the water, and had comfy chairs and couches around gas lit fireplaces which many of us roasted marshmallows for complimentary s'mores.
There's also a beach on property with swimming. We enjoyed watching a mama duck take her little baby ducklings for a walk or a swim along the beach.
All in all, with the discount provided for those living in surrounding states, this hotel was spectacular...
Read moreDelmar hotel Is a recently renovated Holiday Inn. It has beautiful views of the lake. The lobby and restaurant are modern and fresh, the staff pleasant and efficient. We checked in and went to our assigned room we noticed that the carpets in the halls are soiled, but otherwise things seemed to be new and clean. But there was a strong scent of some king of air freshener throughout the hallway As we opened the door to our, we were overwhelmed by the cloying smell of what I believe is a cleaning product like, mistolin, fabuloso or something similar, used by housekeeping on the floor. There was no way we could stay even for a few minutes with the smell. We returned to the front desk and the clerk kindly changed rooms for us. The second was better. However, once we got settled and took off our shoes, we noticed that the floor was sticky to the touch with a residual odor of stale mop. Not wanting to change rooms again, I wiped down the floor with a wet towel. You can see the results in the attached picture. It was filthy. This can happen when housekeeping is not changing the mop water between rooms. If your room is first with a fresh bucket of water, the floor will be clean. If it is one of the last ones of the day, all they are doing at that point is spreading dirty water around, so the use the fragranced cleaner to mask the smell After waking up on and off all night from the noise of the AC fan and fluctuating temperature, I realized that the AC was at one moment cooling, then would sometimes cycle to heat before switching back to cool again. So I had maintenance come to look at the system. The thermostat is either on or off, and permanently set to Auto so it will switch on its own. The maintenance super very kind, but explained that there wasn’t anything he could do about either the noise or thermostat as it is programmed that way. He said that what he usually advises guests, is to turn the temperature down cooler than preference before going to bed, then turn the unit off to prevent it from cycling between hot and cold all night. They clearly know that there is a problem and have not chosen to address it. There are three things I expect from a hotel. It has to be clean, quiet and dark at night for a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, Delmar was 0 for three. You can paint it and put in new furniture, but at its core, its still a Holiday Inn. You just can’t make a silk purse out...
Read moreLet's have a real talk about the over priced, over rated, out dated Delamar! I just returned from my 3 day 2 night trip to Traverse City with my family for a wedding. I booked the Delamar because it had high ratings, was on the lake, and walking distance to Front St. Why not get the full experience of Traverse City. We booked 2 rooms to accommodate everyone. What a disappointment. The first thing to note about the hotel is there is a renovated side (in the last few? years) and a much older side. Our kids had a bay view queen room on the renovated side, which wasn't horrible other than the air conditioning was so noisy I don't know how they slept. The room for my husband and I was a corner queen suite on the older side. The older side of the hotel has one small elevator to accommodate 4 floors of guest rooms! We open the door and it's freezing in the living room area and the entire room smells like smoke that they tried to cover up with a spray. This is a $1200 per night room which has scuff marks on the trim, the tv console is chipped, the sleeper sofa is stained and to top it off, the bedroom part is much warmer. I call downstairs to move rooms. They offer to come up and spray the room, which was not going to fly. There are no more suites available so we move downstairs to a queen room. The air-conditioning isn't dehumidifying in that room and it is sticky and damp. We call downstairs and ask to move again! We are then moved to the "renovated" side of the hotel. It is better, but not great. The room is worn, scuff marks on the trim, stains on the box springs covers, a torn lamp shade, and dusty shelves but the air-conditioning is better. The next morning my husband goes down for coffee. There are not enough people working for the amount of people in the hotel. They run out of coffee, the condiments station is out of everything and full of trash because there isn't a trash can near it. To me it is completely mismanaged and the owner obviously doesn't care. It's honestly such a shame because it is a great location which is probably why people choose it and management doesn't care about standards or repeat customers. My advice if you are going to pay this price for a summer escape, go somewhere else or stay somewhere else in Traverse City where it is less expensive and your expectations...
