St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church — Attraction in Tucson

Beautiful but cluttered outdated church. Bilingual Mass means 99.999% in Spanish. Mariachi music at the 6:30pm Sunday is very bad musically. Off tune and off key and grating to the ears to listen to. Priest has a nice singing voice. His homily was 25+ mins in 100% Spanish. The walls of the church, every surface every wall has a Shutterfly canvas of a saint. Nice to see the not main stream saints represented but the walls are super cluttered. The kneeler are beyond painful. Squeak and bang as everyone puts them up and down. Not one bit of padding on them, and extremely painful to kneel upon. No books in any of the pews; but a donation plaque QR code in English and Spanish every few feet in every single pew. Just moved here hoping to find a hospitable kind parish. Not a single person turned to me at the sign of peace. I turned all around me and waved and tried to initiate; not one person acknowledged me. Communion line goes up to have everyone kneel or stand at the altar for a Eucharistic minister to give out Communion, not the priest. Altar boys in ultra traditional garb. Could be nice. But not. Also huge safety issue: the kneelers all have exposed huge screws. I cut my foot multiple places because of these unprotected extremely large protruding sharp metal screws. This should be addressed immediately and and safety rubber caps placed on every screw in every pew. And update the kneelers to be not so horribly painful. Also, the Google maps directions is terrible. Leads you past the church to the gates closed entrance that is not an actual entrance. Parking lot is a terrible mess with the entrance far down a side street that Google maps does not show you. Whole church and school grounds are gated so you can’t go around and will be routed through a neighborhood with a dead end if you try to turn where Google maps tells you. Also, Mass is much over an hour. Definitely not a quick in and out hour normal Mass. Guess I have to keep looking for a home parish. This is not it. Will...

The teachers that teach 6-8 middle school are horrible. Teachers aren’t good overall, the teachers are always trying to be different, they don’t have good teaching skills, especially the 8th grade teachers. The school asks for lots of money for no reason and they don’t deal with bullying. One teacher is all up on the boys as if she likes them and gets the girls in trouble for no reason, she is a pick me. The teachers say “we prepare you for high school” but they don’t, the teachers are all up on you and don’t help you to show you what high school is...

Never seen a Catholic church ask for $90 per child for religious education and I have lived in quite a few states and travelled the world. I was even told that it should be $200 per student which is outrageous. This church should be ashamed for price gouging families that want their children to attend CCD.
