I took my 8-yr-old nephew last night & it was WONDERFUL! I haven't been to the drive-in since I was a little girl, so I didn't really know what to expect as an adult. Apparently, they have rebuilt the "theatre" (park) from a previous catastrophe...and I think they did an awesome job!
It's obviously not the typical setting, so it's advised to bring bug spray if you're going to watch the movie outside your vehicle or let the kids play in the grass before the movie starts. There were lots of kids (we went to see Disney's "Planes") & families, so my nephew had fun running around with the other kids playing tag, racing, and throwing a frisbee. And since he's a typical boy AND it rained earlier that day, we had an opportunity to visit the restrooms to clean off his shoes because of COURSE he "found" a mud puddle to run through (and I REFUSED to let him back in my car with those nasty shoes on lol).
Although typical of a highway rest stop, the stalls and floors were actually very clean, closed properly, had VERY minimal gaps between the doors (you know, those areas where people can "accidentally" see you in the stall...I HATE that!), the stalls were concrete and went all the way to the floor (for great privacy), and PLENTY of sinks, so there's minimal chance of waiting forever to handle your business and get out. There were no paper towels (probably to minimize trash)...which was annoying in my case of needing to wipe off my nephew's shoes, but I was pleasantly surprised.
There was a concession stand that we didn't visit (because we made a Wal-Mart stop beforehand...it's less than a mile away, and outside food is not forbidden like typical theaters; it would actually probably be nice to bring a small "camp grill" & do some grilling if you get there early enough before the movie), but I heard that the prices were reasonable.
As for the main features of the screen and sound, they were actually very good! The screens were HUGE and the picture was much more vivid than I expected for it to be outside. We didn't experience any of the glare that other reviewers have mentioned, but then again we were on the first row of vehicles (my nephew is legally blind and has ADHD so we needed as little distractions as possible). The radio station we had to tune into for the movie was a little static-y at times, but overall was good.
We had a great time, he enjoyed playing with other kids before the movie started, and was fully engaged the entire time of the movie. We didn't stay for the second movie (yes, you can get two movies!) because it wasn't for kids and it was getting late, so it was a little difficult getting through the tight aisles teeming with people in order to leave.
Overall, it's a nice atypical outing that doesn't break...
Read moreGoing out to see movies is not really my thing, I prefer to just watch them from home unless I’m looking to drop a chunk of change and go all out at a nice theater with dinner and drinks. I’d still take Admiral Twin over any other movie theater I’ve been to in my 30+ years on this planet. As a teenager I’d see the same movie a dozen times because it’s a great place to just go and hang out. It’s almost like watching something at home because if you want to make a comment about the movie, you’re not going to disturb the entire theater.
I was absolutely devastated when it burned down and I am beyond grateful that it was rebuilt. There’s just something really fun about going to Admiral Twin. It’s so much nicer now too! The food is not your typical movie theater quality, but actually much better, more affordable, and they have quite the menu to choose from. Just follow the lawn zombies and walk towards the screens if you’re confused in regards to where concessions is located and you’ll probably be in for a bit of a shock if you haven’t been since they rebuilt it.
My only complaint is a small one, and it’s no reason to not check out this fun piece of Oklahoma history, but I do wish they played The Outsiders a few times every summer. I’ve been more times than I can count, I’ve read the book several times, and, of course, I’ve seen the movie. A lot. So many times. I’d love to get to see it at the location where part of it was actually filmed! I hope they consider showing it occasionally in the future. Crazier things have happened!
One thing that you might want to keep in mind is that they no longer have outdoor speakers. Bring jumper cables just in case. I’ve helped jump countless cars and it doesn’t matter how old or new or fancy or basic your vehicle is. Dead batteries do not discriminate. I mention this because it’s something I see every time I’ve gone and none of those times did anyone besides me have any jumper cables. If they did, they weren’t kind enough to offer assistance.
It’s a very clean place, the food is great, and you can’t beat a movie night at Admiral Twin. You just can’t. You pay by the car load so it makes taking the whole family or a group of friends very affordable!
If you are in Tulsa when it is open, you a absolutely MUST check it out. If you live here and have never been…please remedy that as soon as possible. It’s a movie and an experience! As corny as that sounds, it’s actually completely true.
Three cheers for Admiral Twin!!! It will never...
Read moreSo many good things said about this place. I don't know why. Some have claimed it as a neighborly vibe, but in all honestly I found it to be that "neighborly vibe" with all the annoying neighbors you DON'T want to hang around. We watched "Finding Dory" but before that they were playing "Pete's Dragon" and how the viewers were able to watch that I don't know.
Bad movie? NO. Awful, watered down quality. When you watch a cinematic film, one of the reasons you watch it is for the extremely colorful and amazing shots. Well, have fun having this experience. I expected "Finding Dory" to be bright and colorful but it was dull and the colors were barely vivid. And because of this, when it got into the darker scenes it was almost impossible to see anything. Also, have fun looking at lines because the "wide-screen" is full of them. Really fun having a shot ruined by a bunch of lines distorting the picture...
As for the one who said "neighborly vibe", I don't know what you're talking about. I was parked behind a family with the most annoying children. One screaming what's happening on screen and another pretending his hand is a gun and screaming "POW POW POW POW POW POW". Really fun experience.. In another case, we were re-adjusting to a better spot and had the headlights on. Before we could turn them off, a viewer, now behind us, screams "CAN YOU TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF?? THANKKKK YOOUUU!!". Yeah, give us A MINUTE you want us to crash into another car? Jesus. If this is what you mean as a "neighborly vibe" then I would never want to live near you.
So to summarize, horrible people, expensive for the price of the quality. 35 dollars for 5 people for a god-awful screening, no thanks I'd rather spend 50 for a top quality film screening. NO security. With more and more shootings, I wouldn't trust going to this place. Well, unless that's your sort of "neighborly vibe". After all this, why did I give this two stars? Because you can watch two movies for the price of one. But with quality so watered down, I'd rather just watch one and leave. How anybody can see anything, I have no clue. Would I recommend? NO, don't waste your money and spend the little extra for a REAL...
