Pio Pico State Park is beautiful. There are five acres with lovely gardens and the beautiful restored adobe home of Pío Pico.
It is registered as California Historic Landmark. it is open most days but never in the evening. You can enjoy the park with picnics, bird watching, walks, and exploring the parks wonderful fifteen room adobe. I do not think they are doing guided tours right now, but that might change soon. You really don't need a guide anyway, the place is beautiful and the house/adobe is very interesting.
Pío de Jesus Pico once owned all this land. Pío Pico was the governor of California in 1832.
His adobe home at “El Ranchito” has been completely restored to how it appeared in the 1880’s. Former Governor Pico began to build his home here in about 1848, and it has seen several changes over the last 150 years.
If you are interested in early California history, this is the place for you. It is also just a wonderful park that your whole family will enjoy.
Have a great time and please...
Read moreWow! One word to describe this place: Fascinating! This place is rich in California history as it marks the site of the last home of Pio Pico, last governor of California when the state was in control of Mexico. Here you will find clothing, musical instruments, furniture, tools, tableware, photos, and other artifacts of the time. You will learn what life was like living and working on this rancho. The adobe building is large with many rooms and very beautiful. The restoration of it is superb 👍. The grounds are equally beautiful and there are plenty of benches around to rest. I recommend that after you see the inside of the adobe, walk the trails as you imagine yourself being transported back to that time when life was much simpler than it is today. Then have lunch at one of the picnic benches under the shade. I really enjoyed myself here. This place is definitely for people who are into history, especially California history. Give yourself plenty of time to see everything, take your...
Read moreI recently revisited the 3 acre, Pio Pico Historical State Park. I was pleased to see that minor improvements to the Adobe Mansion, that once belonged to the first Mexican Governor of California, were made since my last visit several years ago. The exhibit provides a wonderful example of how such structures were made. There are limited hands on activities that are available for children. Tours are offered when in attendance.
This park is well maintained and park Rangers are eager to greet you when noticed. There is plenty of parking and drinking fountains can be found throughout the park. Expect to spend about 30 minutes tops, inside the exhibit and another 20 minutes walking outside the grounds. It is free to visit unless you choose to make a donation. Literature is also available in English and Spanish when touring the exhibit. They open at 10a.m. and close by 3:30p.m. It's also great for a picnic, exercising or...
