August 2025 I’ve biked this trail between Wilmington and New Castle dozens of times over the past six years. It’s about 15 miles round-trip, and it’s easy-to-moderate difficulty as it’s mostly flat and paved the entire length, except for the boardwalk stretch over the marshland. It’s very scenic and peaceful most of the way, and there’s a serene canopy of trees for about a mile just north of New Castle.
New Castle is a wonderful small town with great historical significance, and there are numerous small shops and 18th and 19th century buildings to see on your ride. Wilmington, on the other hand, might appear nice on the waterfront, but I made the mistake of a late afternoon ride just once. On my way back north from New Castle, I encountered numerous sketchy individuals all the way from the prison up to the waterfront. Read moreThe head of this trail starts at a nature center with a small museum staffed with excellent people eager to tell you all about the tidal marshes of upper Delaware. The trail itself starts on a great boardwalk through the marsh, and will go a good long way. They have nice informative plaques along the way. You can easily bike this trail, and it is mostly flat.
