It's a great place for families, as well as those who enjoy sports, walking, running. All of the walking trails are for pedestrians only, well paved, and are wheelchair accessible. The park is clean and well taken care of. There are two main walking trails. The inner trail is approximately a mile long, and runs in a circle. There is a long "outer trail", and the number of miles is dependent on which part(s) of the trail that you choose to traverse.
Unfortunately there is no skateboarding allowed on the trails, and due to the shrubbery and limited visibility around bends and slopes, cyclists are strongly encouraged to use the road that runs throughout the park to avoid accidentally hitting pedestrians, children walking with their parents, runners, and dog walkers.
April 1st 2017 was the grand opening of the Splash Pad, which is a great place for adults and children to cool off. The playground was given a large update in the last year, and has a very special feature: a swing designed specifically for those children who are in a wheelchair. There is a short nature path designed for children where they can learn about the different creatures found in the area.
For those who enjoy sports there are baseball fields where the local kids teams play, and two kids sized batting cages. Tennis and basketball courts are located in the same area, all of which are lit at night. A volleyball court can be found across the road, closer to the splash pad.
Multiple picnic shelters are available, and can be reserved for parties or family gatherings. Each one is well lit, and is equipped with picnic tables, a water pump, an electrical outlet, as well as a barbeque grill.
Those who have canine companions have 2 fenced in areas for their dogs to run and play. One is specifically for small dogs. Waste bags and disposal areas are located throughout the park. It's extremely important that you pick up after your pup, or the waste will run off into our creeks that lead to our watersheds and end up as pollutants in our drinking water.
Located at the other end of the park is a pond with ducks, and a bridge that crosses over it. There is also a gazebo, and grassy areas for those who like to picnic. A section of of the walking trail that runs by the pond has been set up for those who want to strengthen their muscles, or learn how to walk a beam. Instructions on how to perform the exercises are posted at each platform.
Festivals are held at the park during the spring. The Earth Day festival is very popular and continues to grow each year. Other activities run...
ย ย ย Read moreLong Leaf Park in Wilmington, NC is a beautiful place! It has tall trees, a variety of birds and paved walking paths. Long Leaf park has a beautiful pond that is so peaceful. It is surrounded by hills. At the top of the hill, Visitors can drive all the way around the pond, and there are parking spaces at various spots above the lake, to pull in facing the lake, so one can sit in the car, enjoying the scenery or get out and walk on the paved trails, or walk under the trees.. As you enter this area overlooking the pond, there is a veteran's Memorial dedicated to people from the local Wilmington area who lost their lives serving our country in various wars, their names are engraved on the black obelisk near the lake here. From the top of the hill, you can look down on the water, but there are paths that are paved which go down to the water level as well. And there is a bridge over the water. There are also benches here and there in convenient locations, where one can rest from walking while absorbing the beauty of the park and watch the squirrels flit around, and also view the wide variety and colors of birds. For example, on New Year's Day, I saw a pair of Eastern Bluebirds at this park, but that is just one example of the many species of birds here. This is a great park for walking dogs! All over the park, families and individuals can be seen walking their dogs, there is a fenced off dog park on the premises as well. In addition to the beauty of nature, this park is also very sport friendly! There is a soccer field where there are sometimes team games that the public can attend. There is also an outdoors basketball court. In addition to all of that, there are picnic tables, and even a permanent structure with many picnic tables where people can have outdoor activities like family reunions and meetings. And a playground for children. And Long Leaf Park is well maintained. The brick building restrooms are opened daily, cleaned frequently and well stocked, as well as well-maintained by the park's workers, who are friendly, kind, and diligent. They maintain the grounds and also empty the trash cans often, so this is a very clean park. I highly recommend Long Leaf Park as a wonderful, safe place to visit which offers something for everyone from the youngest baby to the oldest senior and every age in between to enjoy! Not far from the Mall and the University, for a pleasant experience, come enjoy and explore the great outdoors at...

May we never forget these young men and women whose bravery and courage are beyond measure, badge or medal; yet we must embrace the Mothers who suffer in silence--give them a hug of comfort and peace. The ceremony presented here, reflects recognition to these local Mothers and the Honor Guard for their unwavering dedication and participation during the recent display of the traveling Vietnam War Memorial Wall at Mayfaire, Wilmington; this 24 hour open display had many volunteers from these groups and others to assist the public and our veterans during their solemn visit to the VN Wall in memory of lost relatives and friends who served this nation. We will never forget. Please help protect these monuments of history in recognizing our fallen heroes (the traveling wall is not...
