We went to the sunset show and it was a super peaceful, beautiful, trippy, and mind bending experience all around.
We parked at the lower turrell trailhead. The hike up is steep in spots but fairly manageable if you enjoy hiking… I would say that it’s a moderate hike that takes 10-15 mins - but you should arrive at least 30 mins beforehand so that you can take your time hiking up, catch your breath, and take in the views of Green Mountain Falls. Wear good hiking shoes and weather appropriate attire.
If you are going in the winter also make sure you are bundled up with warm socks as they make you remove your shoes… the space does not have heat and is fairly chilly. I would bring a blanket and/or cushion to sit on if I were to go again in the winter. They do have bathrooms/water refill station halfway down the trail that have heat and are really nice, so you can warm up there and relieve yourself if you need to.
You are greeted by a very knowledgeable guide who welcomes you into the space and explains what will happen. Sunset show lasts for about 50 mins and you experience the sky changing from day to night set to programmed colored lights that slowly change hue and subsequently your perception of the color of the sky. It is a very very beautiful, slow, and meditative experience that will change depending on the conditions of the sky. We had a clear day which was really interesting to experience because the hue of blue in the void was really radiant and at times the void completely disappears into the colored light so that your perception becomes fully absorbed in a single color for a moment. It’s unlike any other work of art that you’ll ever experience if you are patient and perceptive towards it. I’d love to go another time when the sky is filled with clouds to see more colors in the sunset. They also do closed roof shows where artificial light is also projected on a retractable roof, and I’d love to try that as well. Everyone in my group really enjoyed the experience and would do it again.
I would also recommend bringing a headlamp and water. The path is lit at night but gets dark and slippery in spots. They also have an ATV available if you need assistance getting up the hill but you need to request this assistance upon the purchase of...
Read moreI went for a sunset show and it was a quiet, peaceful, and a colorful experience. The experience will last about 50 minutes. It was a cloudy night so that may have hampered the full experience.
When you park be prepared for a hike up a steep hill. It will probably take about 10 minutes. Arrive early so you can enjoy the views of Green Mountain Falls. Wear appropriate attire for the evening. The room is not climate controlled. You will have to remove your shoes once you're ready to enter the Skyspace room. They do have bathrooms about halfway up the hill.
You will sit on a wooden slat type bench seating. The floor when you enter are like...
Read moreA very unique find in Colorado by a popular light artist! James Turrell has created many Skyspaces across the country in some pretty remote areas. The hike up from the trailhead is short but steep. There are restrooms and water fountains located at the halfway point. You must remove your shoes before entering the Skyspace. There are benches lining the outer walls that you can sit or lay down on. Once inside it is super peaceful and quiet with only the sounds of wind and birds. I have only come to visit when it’s open for free however there are specific events that are held here that you can buy...
