Big but unknown. About 300 meters west of the much more famous Lyabi Hauz complex, is the large(er) but much lesser known Khoja Gaukushan complex. Where there used to be a slaughterhouse (gaukushan means "killing bulls"), a madrasa was built in 1570. In 1598, at the instigation of Sheikh Khoja Sa'ad, a Friday mosque was built across the Shahkrud canal. A striking feature of this mosque is the accompanying minaret: this is a smaller version of the Kalon Minaret. The complex has not (yet) been restored and therefore attracts little attention. Nevertheless, a visit to this complex, which is located on a square with a hauz, is well worth it because of...

This square and ensemble is under intensive renovation and promises to become a very cosy part of town, indeed. It contains a Hauz and a small canal. Looking forward to coming back and seeing this finished peoject.
