As an artist, Shavkat Boltayev is committed first to his hometown Bukhara and then to Uzbekistan, by taking wonderful photographs of all aspects of Uzbek life. Read moreBrilliant hidden gem in a small madrasah. It is only one room, filled almost exclusively with the works of Bukharan photographer Shavkat Boltaev and those of his son, Behzod Boltaev. Both are amazing, the father recording the traditions and people of a lost Uzbekistan in a beautiful and raw manner, and the father doing so for the modern Uzbekistan with equal beauty and respect, but with some added wit and occasional humour. The gallery was manned by one of the photographers himself and we had a pleasant time conversing about the context behind some of the pictures exhibited. We were also keen on buying prints of some pictures that were not currently available as prints for sale in the shop, and Nuriddin kindly offered to print them for us.
