From a distance, this beach in the centre of Danang looks absolutely beautiful. Get closer though, and you’ll see the rubbish littering the shoreline, the suspicious murkiness of the water (goggles are useless I’ve found) and far, far too many Korean tour groups everywhere. I applaud individual travelers from every country in the world coming to visit this beautiful, amazing country, but mass tourism always causes negative knock-on effects, wherever it occurs. These are the contributions that aggressive Korean mass tourism has made to Danang in the last decade: huge increases in the cost of holidaying here, a boom (boom) in the hyper-sleazification of the spa industry, increasing servitude (rather than just friendliness) required in the customer service staff, and murderous luxury tour buses mowing down other road users and blocking streets at every junction. They’ve basically done to Danang what the Russians have done to Nha Trang and it unfortunately follows a pattern that Vietnam has been dealing with throughout history with numerous nations including France and the USA having a go at imposing their greedy ‘colonising’ needs and making Vietnam servile. As with most shorelines you visit around the world plastic and things washing up on shore are always a problem but they have groups of ladies that in the morning work the beaches with racks and do their best to clean them up. We have gotten many storms over the last few months with lots of rain and big winds which equal big waves and dirty surf. The sun has now come out and the rains are stopping and the heat is on.
