This hotel has one good thing - location. Everything else is a disaster. From petty staff to dirty towels. Let me expand on my experience. I was on a business trip, had a business meeting next day and after checking in around 5pm I realised there was no iron in the room. So I went to see the staff at the reception and asked for an iron. There were two guys, the shorter one and taller one - Rafael. I think he deserves to be named. So the shorter one told me that they had the iron issued to other guests but they would get it back in the evening. So at 9pm I am back at the reception and this time Rafael deals with me. No irons available. He said he checked every room and they had no irons. They also didn't have ironing boards as they were allegedly all broken. When I said I could use a broken one, just put it on the floor if the legs are broken I was told they threw away all ironing boards. I asked about laundry service as they offered separate ironing. Was told by Rafael that the hotel did not offer laundry and ironing services anymore. When asked why they left the laundry form at the hotel rooms he simply said they are obsolete and it must have been an oversight. Okay. So no iron, no ironing board, no ironing services. I finally managed to iron my shirt at JW Marriott next door where a colleague of mine was staying. Next day in the morning on my way to a meeting I spoke with another member of staff who confirmed they did offer laundry and ironing services. So in the evening, when back from work, I asked Rafael for a laundry bag. To what he replied that they didn't have any. 8 hours later, next day in the morning, when asked another member of staff for a laundry bag she just took it out from the cupboard. From now on I tried to avoid Rafael as he was the most unhelpful and mean hotel staff member I ever come across. Towels were dirty. The washing (if they wash them at all) process the hotel uses is substandard so once they get wet they stink someone else's sweat and body smell. All towels had the same issue so I ended up drying myself using a bath mat as it was the only one not stinking. I have never ever seen that at any hotel ever. I stayed in three other hotels in Rio during my 2 week trip and at none other place the new towels stunk. The bed sheets were stained but at least didn't smell as bad as the towels, maybe because they were not wetted? Did I mention that the bathroom window was open when I moved in and the shower cubicle was covered in sand dust and had to clean it myself? And that there were insects running around on the walls pretty much everywhere in the rooms? And that I was bitten by bed mites during the night? So got some itchy red bumps on top of everything else. The internet was absolutely terrible, slow, breaking up and reconnecting, then breaking up again and reconnecting in an endless loop but always slow. Next door at Marriott the internet was like a dream so it is not that internet in Brazil is poor, it is just the hotel made it difficult for the guests. There is one observation though. The wifi access point on the wall was on on the first day, the green LED orb was lit and there were no issues with the internet. But next day the green orb disappeared and the internet was really poor. Was that my best friend Rafael switching it off? No idea and don't want to know. The breakfast was another issue. Let me tell you about the tea making process. One day they removed the coffee and hot water vending machine and put a pump action airpot with hot water as a replacement. But they used it for coffee the previous day and didn't bother to clean it (as everything in this hotel). So I ended up having a tea coffee flavoured as the hot water was actually a diluted coffee. And lastly, if anyone ever wanted to rinse their feet after coming back from the beach, there is a cubicle at the ground floor but with more sand in it that at the beach. They just don't clean anything at this hotel. There is one thing for sure, they will never...
Read moreI booked Mercure Rio de Janeiro Copacabana only for one reason - hotel is Accor member and I am Club Accor Gold member! We stayed 8 days at Mercure Rio de Janeiro Copacabana. It was a big disaster when every day a new drama or new mistake happens. After so many reviews at Trip adviser or Google map I have a feeling that hotel pay for someone to put good reviews every day. Positive / negative (+/-) during the 8 days stay at the hotel: good location good bed and comfortable sleep very good & speed wifi bar manager can speak english and service minded beach point # 112 which cooperate with Mercure hotel about sun chairs is very good! Very friendly staff. They take care of your stuff and you feel very safe at beach area 112. Lovely lady Lora and her team make you feel very welcome. I wish the hotel staff was as friendly as they are.
very tired hotel which need renovation on all areas Mould everywhere in shover, wc, tiles, the shower head Small room (superior room 720 was booked) which was renovated many years ago. Extremely dirty side balcony which was never cleaned by cleaning staff 2 days out of 8 days no hot/cold water between 2pm to 8 pm 6 of 8 days renovating of main entrance of the hotel with inconveniences to get in and out of the hotel Extremely poor english of the staff, most no english at all Security do not speak any english at all and couldn’t explain how to get in and out hotel during the renovation of the main entrance, so your safety is zero at the hotel because security staff can not speak any word in english. Avoid stay here! 2 small lift for 4-5 people available at the hotel, but one lift was broken during the stay and you need que up about 10 minutes to get you lift up your room. Room was so tired so we tried with reception in during 6 days to change the room with promising to upgrade to deluxe room but on the end, nothing with excusing as hotel fully booked Not much choice at breakfast, serving staff again don’t know any english Bar staff have no idea how to mix the drinks, we ordered a gin and tonic, it came with no gin and no tonic. Aperol spritz came with orange juice in it. Cleaning staff forgot shower gel two days in a row, we had to ask for it at the front desk even though we left them a tip. One person promising late check out at 1 pm but on the day of departure another one asking to move at 12 pm, staff don’t communicate with each other. Of all reception staff of our stay, there was only one who was helpful in any way and showed that he is service minded to us.
So please avoid to book the Mercure Rio de Janeiro Copacabana! Its absolutely not up to Accor standards hotel! Hotel is very poor 3 star hotel for an extremely high price. Its so many another hotel on Copacabana beach for your choice! Our friends stayed at The Windsor California hotel just next door and that hotel is good standard for the same price, with pool and bar at the top and...
Read moreWe stayed 4 days for a vacation, including the beginning of carnaval. The hotel has a prime location that is on the ocean front boulevard and convenient to many shops and only a couple blocks from the metro. The hotel and lobby are decorated festively and there are two small but adequate elevators. We generally choose hotels based on cost as we spend very little time in the room and therefore care little about luxurious accommodations. We chose this hotel because of its competitive price point, and picked the least expensive option. We were therefore not surprised to be given a room on the backside of the hotel facing opposite the ocean and close to the elevator. Coming from the USA, we were a little surprised at the size of the room as it was quite cozy, but for the price, way less than a comparable room on a US beach. Despite the size, the room was well appointed with a private bathroom, plenty of hot water, a programmable safe for valuables, and a good A/C unit. They actually used some very creative strategies to conserve space and make the room feel bigger. The cleaning staff kept the room tidy. The hotel doesn't have a pool, but better than a pool, it has a deal with a beach service that will provide chairs and umbrella on the beach without charge. We found that extremely valuable and prolly more than a pool we would likely not use. The included breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant was excellent. Plenty of options, food was good and plentiful, lots of local and Brazilian treats with options for those with a less adventurous palate, staff was great. The hotel and restaurant staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasant and answered all of our questions. They spoke excellent English, which was a surprise. We especially appreciate the front desk staff, Mattheus, Bruno, and our favorite was a woman (Daniela?), all extremely courteous and helpful. The restaurant, Qceviche, became our favorite restaurant and we had dinner there twice (we love ceviche)! We were extremely pleased with our stay and would highly recommend this hotel to budget and cost conscious travelers who want to feel a more intimate Rio experience. Might not be a great choice for US traveller's looking for a luxury hotel or a high end or US style experience, although there were more expensive room options that we did...
