I stayed in a family room with my two sons at the 161 Lama Temple Courtyard Hotel recently while visiting Beijing. The room had a queen size bed and a single bed and provided enough space for the three of us and our extra luggage. The beds and pillows were comfortable and the AC worked very well. The shower provided hot water and everything in the room worked well. The room and bathroom were cleaned each day and the hotel had a really great atmosphere and was nicely decorated. The wifi worked well. There is a kettle in the room, but no refrigerator or microwave. Breakfast was optional, but we did not order during our stay. We had laundry done while staying here and picked it up the next day.||The hotel is located down an alleyway in one of the hutongs near the Lama Temple. We arrived at Beijing West train station and were picked up in a large van. Since the van could not drive down the narrow alley, our driver had contacted the hotel and the staff met us at the street and helped take the luggage to the hotel. That made it easy for us to find the location and check-in.||The location is excellent for seeing the sights in Beijing. It is just down the street from the Lama Temple and Line 5 and Line 2 subway stations. There are many Chinese restaurants nearby that were packed with people waiting for tables on the main food street around the corner. There were also a few western options nearby too including a great Italian restaurant, a Subway sandwich shop, KFC, and...
Read moreHidden behind a nondescript wooden door in a quiet alleyway in the hutongs this quirky little hotel was a happy oasis in busy and impersonal Beijing. The main reception / breakfast room is a friendly and comfortable bohemian retreat. The rooms are individually decorated. We stayed in two of them. The family room had a funny arrangement with the double bed squeezed into a small space which meant you had to get in and out of bed via the bed end. The double room had more space either side of the bed. In both rooms the beds were comfortable, the AC worked and the bathrooms had everything needed. What makes this place special is the staff. It is mostly a young team who are eager to help, speak pretty good English, are relaxed and friendly and truly seem to love their work. They were helpful with restaurant recommendations, booking shows and explaining transport. They were happy to just chat! The hotel is located an easy walk between 2 subway stations. Breakfast was made to order, wifi was good and the price was reasonable. Who wouldn't want to stay in a friendly personal little place than a large cookie cutter chain hotel? Loved our stay and would highly...
Read moreIf you have ever been down the little alleyways in the Hutong area of Beijing, you will know that there are many doors that appear to lead to nowhere when in fact, they open up to some magical places - one of which is 161 Lama Temple Courtyard Hotel. We were both blown away by the beautiful, traditional, eclectic decor and furnishings when we first walked in, and even more blown away by the sincere and warm welcome by the friendly and lovely staff. They greeted us and offered us tea, then sat us down with a couple of hand-drawn maps and explained where to find some good food, a Chinese SIM card, and ATM and much more. We were so grateful! Everyone there made the stay really special for us, and the room and building was exquisite - the location superb! We will certainly stay there again if we come...
