Room: ||We booked the Deluxe Twin which for Hong Kong fairly generous in terms of size and space. This was the only benefit. The ‘Hotel’ is actually a guest house. WiFi is only provided to several rooms on the fourth and seventh floor. Therefore we assumed that the other floors were residential and not part of the hotel. ||Each room has its own guest house certification on the front of its room doors. In terms of safety we felt quite concerned with respect to the rooms basic services. Firstly the electrical consumer unit hummed throughout our stay. Secondly it appeared that the shower was electrically earthed to the shower screen door. We also had a fridge in our room which I had to turn off due to it making intermittent loud noises throughout the night. The air con worked but also made strange noises. Some lights work and others didn’t. What appeared to be a older fire alarm had tissue stuck done its censor which was really shocking! ||Following the first nights stay we realised that the room door did not lock easily and was actually unlocked whilst we slept. The door was certainly not a fire door either as we could smell smoked tobacco within our room entering the corridor from other guests. ||The room acoustics were also quite bad. Throughout the day and night you could hear other guests entering/leaving and speaking throughout the corridor and neighbouring rooms. |||Comfort:||For the first few days we didn’t get much rest due to hearing other guests talking loudly in other rooms, corridors and doors slamming. Each day around 10:00-11:00 our room door bell was rung by the hotel maid. We were not provided with a ‘Do not Disturb’ door hanger. Therefore each morning we had to request that no cleaning was required. Maids were generally loud slamming doors and cleaning. This didn’t help out jet lag. One morning we left early to take a trip to Macau. On return the sheets had not been replaced and new towels provided had holes in them. On another occasion I used a towel after a shower which ripped in half due to the fabric being washed so many times. We did not use the cupboards/wardrobes as each of them had a bad mouldy smell. Mattress was poor quality and very hard.||Area: ||The guest house is situated in the Sham Shui Po area which is one of Hong Kong’s most deprived areas. Not many tourist spots close to here but the MTR is less than a five minutes walk away. ||Summary: ||Overall we did not enjoy our stay here and certainly would not recommend this guest house for the price we payed. We felt that safety was put a risk and compromised due to the following electrical/fire strategy concerns highlighted above. This accommodation is therefore anything but far from a...
Read moreThis property is also known as the Metroplace Boutique Hotel. Most of the time it is a good, inexpensive option for visitors to Hong Kong who are willing to compromise on space and endure a bit of commotion.||||The rooms here are absurdly small. I had the largest option which was fine for one person, but if both beds were used I don't know where any luggage would fit. The bathroom was quite spacious in comparison. Both were very well lit (you wouldn't believe how many light switches there were) and recently renovated, although as cheaply as possible. A lot of thin plastic in these rooms.||||My neighbor had a single room, which was so small she felt it necessary to come into the hall to make a phone call. Likewise, a family at the other end had their children roaming the hall because it was the only area they could move. Between this and the nonexistent soundproofing, the Metroplace can be very noisy during the day. Thankfully it was much quieter at night.||||Wi-fi was slow and unreliable -- you definitely couldn't use Skype here. Water pressure was fine, but the temperature was inconsistent. The windows did not open as far as I could tell. It was mostly clean, as long as you didn't look too carefully at the dusty corners.||||The location of this hotel is excellent. It is almost equidistant between two subway stops, making access to the rest of the city incredibly convenient. This is a very lively area, though -- think Chinatown in New York City -- and those expecting an austere location will be disappointed.||||All in all, a good set of compromises for a certain type of...
Read moreAfter couple of nights, realized our door wasn't locking (& was probably also unlocked at night when we were asleep). Reported it to reception on a Friday - they said they would get it fixed. On Saturday it was the same - & they said as it was the weekend, nothing could be done until Monday. We had to accept this - even though we didn't believe that in a big city like that, they had no maintenance they could call on. We could secure it by slamming the door over & over, and shoulder charging it until we knew it was secured. On Monday morning we reminded them & when we got back late afternoon it was completely unlocked (cleaner had just shut it, expecting it to lock). That was the last straw - we told them we had to change rooms. When gathering our things together, we checked the drawers under one of the beds - it had disposable cups full of cigarette butts & ashtrays that looked to have been there for quite a while. Also the bathroom cupboard had a smelly, mouldy towel thrown in it. Cleaning obviously isn't a priority. The only plus was Victor on night reception- who felt terrible & tried to make up by helping us move our things &...
