I've stayed here a few times before. It is my favourite location in Macau, every place that I am interested in is so easily accessible including two supermarkets within a stone's throw and a small unremarkable looking family restaurant on the by-lane opposite side of the casino entrance that serves up excellent Mapo Tofu every time. The hotel lacks in no comfort. It also has a cute little swimming pool and jacuzzi area open till 10pm (I surprised them by landing up at 9:40pm and being told the place was closed. When I pointed out that closing time was 10, the attendant went running to the spa manager and suddenly the attitude changed and she welcomed me to the facilities which I used for 15 minutes). The receptionist at the Chinese restaurant could give me no suggestions as she and her co-worker spoke no English. Though it's operated by a third party, the hotel is an international one, and the Chinese restaurant should have some English capability.
Oskar's is a pleasant quiet bar at ground level and the staff are friendly. Same with the bell desk. But the crowning glory of this hotel is a front office lady named Kathryn who checked me in. I have known her from past stays and I have never met a more perfect front office person than her anywhere in the world. Kathryn is friendly, helpful, highly professional, and intelligent. She can resolve any issue of complexity with not a single hitch. In this instance I had booked one night on the IHG site and the next night through an online agency. Behind the scenes, she was able to contact the agency to confirm the next day's booking, ensured upfront I did not have to change rooms or do two checkouts, and she informed me by message when everything had been resolved. To perfection, I must add. Apart from the location and comfort, it is Kathryn who keeps bringing me back to this particular hotel. She's a real asset to the hotel and IHG and I hope management recognizes her contributions. She also has a smart and efficient colleague (Dala?) who also seems to know what she;s doing. It's a busy hotel - I really wish the group would move group tourists to other IHG places like Cotai or Crowne Plaza so I could get better room availability at this hotel when I seek to book. In the end it is the staff like Kathryn who make one feel like a VIP (even if one isn't) who really...

Read moreWhile the hotel is located in the middle of the city and its busy streets this was not noticed from inside the rooms.
Rooms are located between Level 10 and Level 28, with some Level numbers not used. Having contacted the hotel prior to arrival I was informed we would be upgraded to a room on a high floor due to my membership status. At check-in the key wallet in the paperwork indicated a room on Level 27. The check-in staff took this away and changed it to a room on Level 17. Given that rooms are located between Level 10 and Level 28 there were more floors above us than below us and it did not seem that in the end we were on a high floor. Also, the lift buttons indicated that Level 27 was one of the two Executive Levels. Oh well.
The room was clean and tidy, bed comfortable and decent pressure in the shower. 2 small bottles of water are provided daily, but this is not much for a family of four. Only issues were the iHome, with a non working display so it could not be used and the TV, where many channels needed the sound turning up to maximum to hear anything. More regular checking and maintenance of in-room facilities is required.
Breakfast had a good selection of hot foods, both Western and Asian. Colds foods such as salad, fruit, pastries had a limited selection. Chilled milk and juices were available, but no chilled water.
We went to the restaurant for dinner one night, the same one used for breakfast, and found it empty. The menu is the same as that used for room service, including breakfast, sandwich items etc. Maybe this is why there was no-one else there. It really needs its own menu. We did not stay.
The hotel location makes it a good place from which to explore the main centre of Macau along with it's old streets and buildings. It is also possible to walk to some of the newer casinos (not...
