建於1939年，為澳門目前最古老的街市之一，建築物設計簡潔，沒有多餘的裝飾，強調橫向線條設計和橫向的窗戶，屬現代主義風格建築。街市的設計遵從「形隨功能」的原則，鑑於當時沒有通風設備，街市的窗戶就是唯一的通風和採光媒介，除了橫向的大窗外，天台上也設有第二層的窗戶，增強採光和通風。雀仔園街市像是一個社區心臟，連繫著宛如微絲血管及動脈的橫街窄巷，在熱鬧的市集及叫賣聲之中帶動著人的流動，食物的流動及感情的流動，維繫著整個社區的生命力，讓雀仔園生趣盎然。 This oldest surviving market in Macau was built in 1939, Mercado Municipal Horta da Mitra is a modernist architecture which could be seen from its minimal design, elements without decoration and the horizontal lines and ribbon windows. The design of the market followed the principle of “Form follows Function” Since there was no ventilation system at the time, windows were the only ventilation and natural light source of the market. Therefore, besides the large horizontal windows on the façade, another layer of windows was added on the roof to enhance the airflow and natural light inside the market.
