So... I've stayed at Hotel Cachet Shanghai many times and have written at least two very enthusiastically positive reviews. It's in a great location (only downside is the temporary fact that the building in front of hotel is a construction site, even early on Sunday mornings, but that's not the hotel's fault), and the rooms have a classic (not modern/chain hotel) feel -- very clean, comfortable, and superb service. If you go through my previous reviews you will see photos not of the rooms, which are absolutely great, but of the breakfast spread. The hotel is under new management (even has a different name, I believe), and perhaps given that the hotel struggled, as did all hotels, to be operational during COVID/foreign travellers reduced, etc., they decided to cut back on what once was the best breakfast buffet (healthy, great variety, fresh... beat any other hotel that I've stayed at in Shanghai); instead you have an ala carte menu that they give you when you check in, with a standard Chinese or "western" option that you can get at any hotel. I was disappointed enough, since my wife joined me on this visit and I kept bragging about the breakfast (and great lunches too!), to just not even order the breakfast, even though I had paid for it (plus they now open later in the morning... now it's 8:00am). That said, the customer service continues to be excellent. The downgraded breakfast is not the hotel employees fault. In I'm delighted that the new management chose to keep many of the amazing staff members from before on their payroll -- great young professionals, some from the Philippines, and nice/helpful as ever. Our train got delayed, so we asked to stay much later than normal check out time, and they agreed at a very small up charge. So, very happy, and breakfast is just one small part of the entire experience. My frustration was that I had built it up with my wife, so expectations were high, delivery low. Happy to recommend, though, and maybe they'll add the amazing breakfast once business picks up again -- maybe just call ahead of time before you agree to purchase the breakfast at an additional fee, as there are numerous places to get coffee and pastries right in front of the hotel that...
Read moreThe location of this hotel is great, the staff is pleasant but nearly not one person we spoke to could speak English or French, which made any type of communication near impossible. We were using translation tools but they didn't always do a good job!
We went for a larger room supposedly 45m2 as we came with our 15 month old baby and even though it was quite spacious it definitely isn't 45m2. We had originally requested a cot for our baby as she was included in the booking but the staff could only offer us a mattress with no barriers which made it slightly unsafe and she ended up falling out of the bed.
One of the main reasons we booked this hotel was the pool. A huge surprise when we arrived was that there was no pool. One staff member informed us that there wasn't one and she wasn't sure why it was indicated on Agoda. Then another member tried to tell me that due to the construction work outside and the fact that it is a "rooftop" pool it was closed. The lift only goes up to floor 7 which is rooms and everything else is displayed including the gym and laundry room. The staff member clearly thought he was trying to fool me and it clearly wasn't the first time he had been asked as his response seemed quite natural, which again I did not appreciate being lied to but because of the barrier in communication I wasn't going to start an argument with him.
This hotel is displayed as a 5 star but in all honesty I would not consider it as such. The rooms are clean, there is access to a coffee machine in the lobby, the washing machine and dryer are free to use which came in handy with our baby but the lack of swimming pool and cot meant that it put a huge damper on our impression...
