Please read before considering booking. We booked Shanghai suite for approx $600 aud a night.Management turned off all cooling for entire hotel due to “winter” season, we booked end of March. The second last day of our stay was 26c and last day was 30c, impossible to sleep. Old building with no heat dissipation. Each room has aircon controls but no matter what setting you put it on (fan, sun, snowflake) it was blowing hot air. When I called the hotel staff they advised nothing they can do and open a window.Do not disturb button for our suite did not work. One morning cleaner didn’t even knock and came in while my gf was in bed and I was in the shower. My gf doesn’t speak Chinese and the cleaner doesn’t speak English, shocking.Thirdly there was a stain on the carpet, please see attached photo. Our shower fixture was broken/leaking and spraying water everywhere. Please see attached photos.Lastly many of the reviews are fake. Our booking was split between 2 reservations, 1 night under my gf trip app and then 4 nights under my trip app. When we went to front desk counter the next morning to change rooms. The staff member said that he had a gift for us, we didn’t want the gift as we were running late but the staff member insisted, it was an eyeshade and some hand creams. Apon receiving these “gifts” the staff member said in return I must give them a good review on trip, I said okay I will, he then said no I have to do it right now in his presence. So on my gf phone we (had to) give 5 star for everything and when we got up to the comment section I said what do you want me to write, he just grabbed my gf phone out of my hand, typed something, reviewed everything and clicked submit and gave it back to me. So don’t believe the 4.8 rating that they have. I believe the staff member was name cong or cong congI raised all of the above with trip.com who were extremely helpful and professional with trying to resolve this issue. In the end the hotel would only refund me 20% of my stay approx $211 aud. Trip has also offered to refund me an additional 10% from their end which I appreciate. I would also like to note I raised this complaint with trip 4 days ago and the 20% refund was only just offered to me 15 mins ago. Trip has been chasing them up and updating me continuously over the 4 days. I think the first 2 days the hotel manager was apparently not available. I also raised the issues when checking out, the staff member insisted on trying to give me eye shades which I turned down and then insisted on adding me on WeChat advising he wanted to resolve this and make things right. It’s been 2 weeks since we checked out and not a single message, I have no idea why he was so pushy to add me and then not do anything, very unprofessional. Mattress is old and springy so don’t expect a supportive firm/latex mattress. Pillows were flat, no other pillows due to high occupancy of hotel from f1 in Shanghai. I would think as a suite guest you’d have some on reserve. I asked for ice on one of the hot days and it never came. One night my food delivery had been delivered for 20 minutes according to app but never came to room, my gf went down to collect only to see all hotel staff standing around and my food on counter unattended. The electronically controlled blinds don’t work like the dnd button, we just hand pulled them.Rooms or “suites” were very old, our expectations may be too high but we booked a suite for quite a lot of money and it definitely was not...
Read moreI have stayed in multiple hotels in SH. Including The Conrad, Renaissance, Pudong Intercontinental and Maxx. Maxx is definitely a hotel with Character, Style, and Color. unlike your everyday & everywhere the same ‘typical 5* hotel’ it has many ‘caring’ features for a truly delightful experience. the flowery scent of the lobby area and the service coffee machine and tomatoes in the lobby, are just some of the small but very delicate warmth that I felt while staying at Maxx. the wooden floor in the room was very good too, especially with kids because carpet floors, how ever much you clean, it does have that raggedy smell with time. but not at maxx. The view? second to none obviously. the location? prime - right in front of the ferry to pudong. and 5-10mins from yuyuan gardens. Especially, the staff. I have had my share of rather unfriendly staff in China. But all of maxx’s staff were sooooo friendly and warm and kind. the door men (both Chinese and western person) - they helped us every time we went up and down the entrance stairs with our pram with the baby, and the check in staff were so caring too. And i see a lot of people complaining about the fact that the staff are not fluent in English. Bro, turn on your google translate man. you are half way across the Earth in China, and no where does it say anywhere ‘our staff are fluent in English’ - ‘when in Rome…’ - But to be fair, Maxx had multiple lady staff who were sufficient in English to my surprise, and she was really nice and helpful. (please give her a raise lol).Anyway I will definitely stay here again w/o even looking at other hotels in SH for...
Read moreThe hotel is not worth its five stars. First, the staff does not understand any English in an international hotel, so every conversation is tedious and there are many misunderstandings. Of course I don’t expect that everyone speaks English here, but in other Chinese five star hotels I visited so far they had professional translation gadgets at the reception. Second, my parents were booked into a room which promised a ‘city view’ and looked at pipes only. The windows were so dirty you could not even see outside. During the night the noise within the room was so loud they could not sleep one bit. Upon complaint they received ear plugs (what a disgrace!) until they were finally relocated to a room with an actual city view and no buzzing throughout the whole night. Third, the light switches and buttons which control the room settings did not work in my room. Upon complaint exactly nothing happened. The lights were shining into my face all night. Fourth, the air conditioning keeps turning on and off all night to wake you up if I don’t set it to a freezing 17 degrees. It it’s off you here water running through the walls. The toilet beeps every time you sit on it waking the other person. The door beeps when you open it. Fifth, the breakfast buffet is not great, not many vegetarian options. Sixth, no spa, no pool, no massages to book like in most other places. The only good things about the hotel are its location, design furniture and the sweet house keeping. Otherwise: Really disappointed, never...
