I've lived in my share of scrappy hotel rooms in Paris - when you order a cheap stay, I'm not complaining about a dirty room, a bad bed and a toilet that's falling apart - actually I think it's part of the charm. This was the case with this room at Azur Hotel which is located in one of my favorite parts of Montmartre - I would highly recommend this area.||BUT!|When I'm awoken in the middle of the night by two mice nibbling away at a croissant I left on the table, I'm suddenly not so overbearing anymore. After having tried to complain to the very rude receptionist (who was sleeping on a madras on the floor) that this was not acceptable both in French and English he seemed to finally understand, but he did not offer any apology. He just stated that we shouldn't have left food on the table. I then demanded a different room, which we got. And it was a lot nicer. So much so that I'm confused why they even rent out the complete dump of a mouse infected room in the first place. ||We were told to be home before 1am in the evening, otherwise we couldn't get in. After some arguing we were 'allowed' to call a number and be let in later if we wished. ||I think they have some family staying in some of the other rooms - and he was just so loud through the whole night, and when he wasn't making weird throat sounds he had his tv blasting. The cleaning lady spoke so loudly on the phone while cleaning it woke us up. I sound a little touchy, but believe me when I say I'm used to living in low budget hostels, so I'm not a very sensitive traveler.||And on the last day I - of course - woke up with a bunch of bites on my ankles, arms and face from bed bugs.||So I would NOT recommend this place. Stay somewhere else in this...

Read moreThis is probably the most complicated place to put into a number out of 5 that I've been, so I'll break it down into sections.|Hotel (2/10):|The hotel itself was not nice. Reception is a tiny office with a desk, and nothing down there is very organized. The stairs are very old (no lift available), with very shaky or even broken handrails. The doors are thin and the stairs are very loud, especially with the solid flip-flops that the family living there seems to prefer wearing, judging by the sound. |Room (7/10):|The room was great. Barely any mold in the shower, and the whole room seemed to have been renovated recently. The bed was comfortable, hardwood floors were clean, and the bathroom was both well-stocked and clean. For the price, the room was amazing.|Staff (4/10):|The staff are friendly and helpful, and they speak decent English. They are also willing to speak French with a foreigner, which is sometimes rare in Paris. However, we frequently had to go searching for them, as they were not at the main desk. Then, on the last day, there was nobody to be found at all when we tried to check out. Summary? Good, when they're around.|Area (4/10):|The surrounding area is half and half great and bad. At the nearest metro station, peddlers and pickpockets block most of the sidewalk during peak hours, trying to sell knock-off Ray-Bans or get you to sign sheets of papers. However, the area around the hotel is rich in restaurants and feels very "local". If you can (or are willing to) put up with peddlers and pickpockets on your way to the metro twice a day, its a...
