Stay from 19/06/2015 to 22/06/2015 (3 nights)
As for the NOVOTEL Gare de Lyon, we wanted to test this hotel since a long time due to positive reviews. As we are a family of 3, it’s always difficult to get suitable rooms in MERCURE hotels (NOVOTEL are more suited to families). However this time we got the junior suite #704 for 2 to 4 persons. We arrived at around midnight which is no big deal as reception is opened 24/24. No welcome drinks despite the fact that we are A|Club Platinum member (and early users of ACCOR hotels for the last 30 years now). We jumped on the elevator up to 7th floor and immediately noticed a strong smell from some air freshener. Situation is even worse on the 7th floor but hopefully not in the room. This is due to the use of carpets. Therefore this hotel is not for you if you have allergy issues!!! which is very unfortunately our case. Junior suite is rather small; you will have problems storing your suitcase even though we have rather small suitcases. Walls are very thin; you will hear quite well all activity in #703 and especially the slamming doors (what a shock when you discover this especially early in the morning, I literally stood up in my bed). The HD TV set is great with rear light system. Bathroom is also fine with rain shower. There is an excellent noise insulation from the outside that works really well with the metro noise but not with cars on boulevard Vincent Auriol. There is a boulangerie (closed during weekends) besides the hotel and a small FRANPRIX supermarket (opened every day including Sundays with freshly squeezed orange juice) just across. Hotel breakfast buffet is extremely expensive at 18€ / person. There is a tiny tiny refrigerator in the room with soft beverages (no refill during our stay). There is a rather large safe suitable for laptop up to 15”. Free wifi available although very slow. Connection to public transport is straightforward with metro station “Quai de la Gare” just in front of the hotel although line 6 will lead you to Trocadéro, Champs Elysées and Denfert Rochereau for airports connection (CDG or ORY).
Pros 24/24 reception Good bathroom equipment Nice HD TV Free wifi (although slow at 2Mb/s download measured at 5am in the morning)
Cons Rather small rooms (and junior suite #704 is the largest one) Very strong air freshener smell in elevator and corridors due to carpets (strong warning to people with allergies) Noise from other rooms (external noise insulation very good though) and slamming doors Location is so-so considering that Métro line 6 does not lead to many major hot spots apart from Trocadéro and Champs Elysées (although good connection for airports at Denfert Rochereau) Free soft beverages but NO refill!!! great if you stay 1 night, not so great for...
Read moreEveryone's passports were stolen, they were taken from the room. We traveled to Paris with my wife, a 10-year-old boy and a 2-year-old baby. We booked two adjoining rooms because there were no four-person rooms available. The person at the reception very friendly, we arrived a little early and they gave us a room first. Because we were tired from the trip, we put the Do Not Disturb sign on both doors, but every day people entered our rooms. With the excuse of stocking the coffee station, or cleaning, even when we specifically told people that we did not want them to clean up for us. The first day a European man with light eyes and gray hair came in, while my wife was bathing alone. The second day a lady with African features came in who only spoke French and said that she did not understand us, to whom both my wife in a room and myself told her that we did not want our room cleaned. but he went in anyway. The third day a man with African features came in who just spoke French when I was alone in the room's bathroom. Unfortunately, since we were in two rooms, my wife thought that I had kept the bag with the passports and I thought the same. We didn't realize it was missing until we got to take the train to London. I called the hotel and spoke to two people at the reception a woman and then a man but they told me that the room had already been cleaned and that there was nothing. They offered me no help or investigate the situation. I think it is a network dedicated to stealing passports because they had jewelry, cell phones, tablets, watches, but they only took the...
Read moreLovely stay which was enhanced by a free upgrade and nice staff. Some hotels just feel right and this was such a place. We had room 701. Room looked modern and freshly renovated, clean as well. Window could open for fresh air. During the night the airconditioning worked well mid July and was silent for comfortable sleeping. Nice shower (rain and normal) and small bath tub. Appreciated the Nespresso and free large bottle of sparkling as well as normal water that we could refill as much as we liked. Room was nicely decorated. Big tv as well. Bathroom small for two but it worked out fine. Nuxe soap and body lotion. Full body mirror. Comfortable little seating area in the room. Location; on average 25 minutes from the restaurants we’d choose or locations we’d visit. This worked well for us. Metro line 6 is in front of the door of the hotel but that mainly covers the south of Paris. For destinations mid Paris or north of the Seine you first walk 10minutes from the hotel to another metro station. The hotel is a 2 minute walk from a nice strip of bars right on the side of the Seine. Great to hang out in the evening. Apart from that, the area did not seem to offer a lot to stroll and not too many nice shops or restaurants within a 5-10min radius. There is a bakery next door and a supermarket across the street so essentials are covered. We felt the hotel was well connected and it offered us an atypical side of Paris to explore. We had a lovely weekend here and love...
