Pension Galazios Kolpos — Hotel in Alonnisos Municipality

Sometimes when I review a hotel I look at all the little practical things. Is the shower too small?Does it have those infernal shampoo sachets? Does it have bedside tables, bedside lights, plugs in convenient places, good wifi, good TV? All those little things can go to make up a good place you want to stay in or an annoying place you want to leave. When I am staying in hotels I am usually on holiday. I have made the effort and paid a lot of money to fly somewhere with better weather and more interesting things to do than I will find in Middlesex. And that includes the hotel. I do not expect a place I am staying to be worse than Middlesex. Unless I am going to Egypt. Or Dundee. In reality it is not the sum of the little things that make a place good or not. It is the little things that annoy us when we stay in a bad hotel and it is the little things that give us joy when we stay in a place we love. I love this place. Yes, the shower is too small and there is no shampoo, not even in sachets. And yes, the cutlery looks like the remnants of a jumble sale with 27 forks and just two knifes, one of them rusty the other meant for cutting fruit. And yes, it looks like it was decorated by my grandmother; from a jumble sale. Oh, and the TV is old and small and only has poor reception in Greek. But I don't care. This place is magical. The balcony is small and only has a restricted view of the harbour. But they told me that: they were honest. And that restricted view is like a glimpse of paradise. The welcome is friendly and incredibly helpful. The girl from the pension even came down to meet my ferry. That is the sort of service George Clooney gets. And I am not even famous. Or American. Sure they had ruched the sheets like the napkins at a cheap wedding. But more importantly it does have bedside tables and lights. And it is peaceful. And the wifi works. Not something that can be said for many more expensive hotels. This place is a bargain, no doubt about that, but even if I were to win the lottery - and according to an email I received recently from Nigeria, I most probably have - I would not spend my next holiday at The Dorchester or the Burj Al Arab. No, I would come back to Pension Galazios Kolpos in Alonissos. And I would be very, very happy here.||||And now the practical stuff.|| ||Getting there:||I took the ferry from from Skiathos which has flights to and from London (try Thomson for direct flights). The ferry takes 2 hours 10 minutes though there is a faster, more expensive FlyingCat. I pre-booked the ferry online using DirectFerries.com (their booking fee was less than other options I found on Google) but in late August there should be no problem buying your ticket on arrival in Skiathos. The Hellenic Seaways office is directly over the road from the ferry port. If you book online you will have to pick up your tickets (check in) here at least an hour before departure. I also received the option to check in online and print my own tickets a couple of days before the departure but I was already in Skiathos by then. The ferry makes one stop on the way at Skopelos. It is a beautiful harbour and the location of parts of Mamma Mia and it is tempting to get off here but it is just 25 minutes from Alonissos by FlyingCat if you want to do it as a day trip.||||To get to the pension, if they don't meet you, go up the steps directly behind the ferry port and walk about 50 metres along the nice promenade that looks down to the harbour. My room was a twin-bed studio with a kitchen (good sized fridge with freezer) and balcony; I could have got a room with better views but without a kitchen.||||Walking: ||The island is renowned for walking and hiking but the trails are not obvious so if you are serious I would recommend buying Bente Keller or Chris Browne's book before you come. You can buy Bente Keller's in the local shops for 11€ or a proper ordinance survey map. I followed my nose and used the Internet but did take a few wrong - though interesting - turns along the way.||||Votsi Beach: ||Votsi is a nearby beach with fantastic swimming and postcard views within 30 minutes walk from Patiriti. Take the right most road up from the port and follow the road veering right through Votsi itself till you see the sign for the beach. Votsi is a pebble beach like most on the island so bring something comfortable to lie on. Continue on around the corner past the beach for a short wooded path to the headland. And watch out for steep drops into the sea.||||The Old Village:||The Old Village is about 2.5 km but I would suggest getting the bus there (€1.60, buy tickets in the shops in the harbour as they don't sell them on the bus) and walking back. The buses are not very frequent. The Old Village is a nice tourist stop with plenty of bars, restaurants and little shops. It is not really old in the fashion of the Old Town in Rhodes but a pleasant place to wander and lunch for a couple of hours. The best of the beaches down from the Old a Village is I think Mikros Mourtias. ||||Walking back to Patiriti from the Old Village take the stone path down to the right (it had just a hand painted cardboard sign when I was there) as you head back down the main road just past the end of the concrete footpath that goes the last 100 metres to the village. This is a pleasant walk on a mainly wide stone path and finally comes out on the harbour road just above the shops. If you wish to walk to the Old Village from Patiriti take the left-most road from the harbour and look for the sign to Hora once you have passed all the shops. This looks like a driveway but follow it up and eventually you will see the wide path up to the right.||||Mikros Mourtias Beach:||Walk through the centre of the Old Village and you will come to a path for Mikros Mourtias beach. This is a long but pleasant walk down with bits of shade. The beach is small and graffiti at one ends proclaims it a nudist beach but given its easy access and proximity to the village they are likely to be in the minority here. There is a bit of shade under olive trees up from the beach.||||Vithisma Beach:||I think this is the best beach within walking distance of Patiriti (about 30 minutes). It is a recognised nudist beach and it is long enough that I was able to find a private piece of sand and imagine I had the whole beach to myself. Take the left-most road up from the harbour and take the first left, about 20 metres up. The road is very step to start with but after a while it becomes a pleasant walk with occasional pockets of shade. Follow the road towards Marpounta until you see the hand written sign for Vithisma up a dirt road to the right (this is ok for non 4-wheel drive all the way to the parking area above the beach). Follow this road till you come to a lamppost with Vithisma Beach written on it and a parking area. On foot take the road down to the left then the first right and you will find a steep path leading down to the beach. On a Friday in early September the beach was almost deserted in the morning with only the odd tourist boat coming past for a peek at the nudists.||||The beach is fine shingle so more comfortable than most of the pebble beaches and the water is beautifully clear.||||Plakes Beach:||On the road to Marpounta, well before the turnoff for Vithisma and just before Camping Rocks camping ground, is a narrow shady path down to Plakes beach. This is a lovely deserted rocky cove. The moss on the stones makes getting in and out of the water difficult but you may well find yourself with this place all to yourself in...

I seldom go back to same country I visited the year before, let alone the same town. So for me to return to same room in the same the pension 12 months later you know it must have been good. But is it a mistake to return so soon to a place you loved? In this case no. In fact the room was even better now with a new kitchen and a brand new fridge. There was good selection of glasses including proper wine glasses and small Ouzo glasses. Otherwise it was just as I had remembered and had looked forward to all year. Even the boat moored in the harbour that was the backdrop to so many of my 'meal on the balcony' photos was the same. And the welcome was even warmer. No Pension Galazios Kolpos sign needed this time as Ioanna greeting me at the harbour like a long lost relative. On my last day she even brought me a feta pie cooked by her mother. There is certain assurance you get when you arrive at a place and the wifi on your phone connects automatically because it remembers you have been there before. I dare say I will remember this place much longer than my iPhone.||||The Practical Things: Small private balcony with table and two chairs, sun umbrella and clothes line. Small kitchen with full sized (brand new) fridge and grill with hot points. Coffee maker and other appliances available. Plenty of good quality plates and glasses. Ask if you need more cutlery though there was a cork screw. Two single beds with mosquito netting (there was only the occasional one around in September). A couch and good sized wardrobe. Small TV but only local greek stations. Average sized bathroom and small shower. Wifi ok for Skype calls. Just a few minutes walk down to...

Αφού επιλέξαμε να μείνουμε στο Πατητήρι,που κατά τη γνώμη μας είναι η καλύτερη επιλογή διαμονής στην Αλόννησο για όσους δεν έχουν τάσεις ερημίτη,νοικιάσαμε το διαμέρισμα δύο δωματίων που έχει η επιχείρηση (ένα μόνο,τα υπόλοιπα είναι δωμάτια) και μείναμε τέσσερα άτομα (δύο ενήλικες και δύο παιδιά) για μία εβδομάδα.Το διαμέρισμα είναι πολύ απλό,πράγμα αναμενόμενο για τιμή 70 ευρώ την ημέρα σε φουλ σαιζόν,αλλά έχει όλες τις βασικές παροχές και επιπλέον μία πολυτέλεια για την κατηγορία του: ασύρματο διαδίκτυο σε όλα τα δωμάτια.Αυτό όμως θεωρώ ότι είναι αντιστάθμισμα στο γεγονός ότι η τηλεόραση είναι διακοσμητική (εκτός αν έχετε μαζί σας φορητό μηχάνημα dvd και δίσκους ,όπως εμείς),αφού δεν πιάνει απολύτως κανένα κανάλι λόγω τοποθεσίας.Επιπλέον το διαμέρισμα έχει πλήρη κουζίνα μέσα στο ένα από τα δωμάτια.Το μοναδικό κλιματιστικό μηχάνημα δροσίζει επαρκώς και το δεύτερο δωμάτιο,αν έχετε ανοικτή ή μισάνοικτη την διαχωριστική πόρτα των δωματίων. Το βασικότερο ατού της πανσιόν είναι η θέα στο μικρό λιμάνι του Πατητηριού,που είναι ιδιαίτερα γραφικό,και ιδιαίτερα τη νύχτα που είναι φωτισμένο. Εμείς είχαμε ανοιχτές συνεχώς τις κουρτίνες για να απολαμβάνουμε αυτήν τη θέα,αλλά να έχετε υπόψη σας ότι το διαμέρισμα βρίσκεται λίγο ψηλότερα από το επίπεδο του πεζόδρομου (αυτό δεν ισχύει για τα δωμάτια),που σημαίνει ότι κάποιος περίεργος περαστικός μπορεί να σας δει μέσα στο μεγάλο δωμάτιο.Επί μία εβδομάδα πάντως σε μάς έτυχε μόνο ένας τέτοιος περίεργος.Οι υπόλοιποι κοιτούσαν μπροστά τους...Αν έχετε παιδιά, το ασύρματο ίντερνετ στα δωμάτια είναι ιδιαίτερα χρήσιμο.Η νεαρή Ιωάννα,κόρη των ιδιοκτητών της πανσιόν,είναι ιδιαίτερα εξυπηρετική και καθαρίζει κάθε ημέρα τα δωμάτια,ενώ είναι πρόθυμη να σας δώσει όποια πληροφορία ζητήσετε.Η στάθμευση είναι πρόβλημα,διότι η πανσιόν διαθέτει μόνο μία θέση (που η Ιωάννα μας παραχώρησε αφού το ζητήσαμε και νοικιάσαμε το διαμέρισμα),ενώ ακριβώς απέναντι από την πίσω πλευρά της πανσιόν υπάρχει ξενοδοχείο,οπότε η εύρεση θέσης στάθμευσης σε απόσταση μικρότερη από 400-500 μέτρα (ανηφόρας...) είναι εξαιρετικά δύσκολη. Από το διαμέρισμα μέχρι το λιμάνι του Πατητηριού πρέπει να περπατήσετε λίγο στον πεζόδρομο και να κατέβετε καμμιά τριανταριά σκαλοπάτια, αλλά αν είναι μεσημέρι θα το σκεφθείτε για να τα ανεβείτε,αν δεν είστε αθλητικοί τύποι...Στο λιμάνι των μικρών πλοίων (δίπλα είναι το λιμάνι για τα μεγάλα) έχει μεταξύ άλλων δύο καλές ταβέρνες (που τις χωρίζει ένα παντοπωλείο και ο δρόμος) με σχετικά λογικές τιμές.Με την πλάτη σας προς το λιμάνι,η ταβέρνα στο δεξί σας χέρι έχει περισσότερη ποικιλία,ενώ στο αριστερό έχει κυρίως μενού ψαροταβέρνας.Επ΄ευκαιρία,και όχι διότι γράφω για τις συγκεκριμένες ψαροταβέρνες,να ξέρετε ότι κάποιοι ασυνείδητοι ταβερνιάρηδες,θέλω να ελπίζω η μειοψηφία,βάζουν μεταλλικά βαρίδια μέσα στα ψάρια και τα ζυγίζουν μπροστά σας με αυτά,ενώ στην συνέχεια τα αφαιρούν όταν τα πάρουν μέσα στην κουζίνα.Προσοχή λοιπόν,και να΄χουμε υπόψη μας ότι ιδιαίτερα στην εποχή κρίσης που περνάμε,οι καταναλωτές-πολίτες πρέπει να βοηθούμε ο ένας τον άλλο με κάθε εφικτό τρόπο.Αν βρίσκεστε στην Αλόννησο,είναι must να κάνετε μιά ημερήσια εκδρομή στο θαλάσσιο πάρκο.Τα περισσότερα σκάφη σας πηγαίνουν μόνο μέχρι το γειτονικό νησί της Περιστέρας,αλλά δύο (η "Γοργόνα" και ο "Πλανήτης") σας πηγαίνουν μακρύτερα,στην Κυρά-Παναγιά,όπου υπάρχει ένα ενδιαφέρον μοναστήρι με...έναν μοναχό κατά τους χειμερινούς μήνες και περισσότερους το καλοκαίρι.Εμείς προτιμήσαμε το κλασσικό τρεχαντήρι "Γοργόνα" του καπετάν Πάκη,που είναι κεφάτος, πλακατζής και μορφωμένος,αν και έχει το μισό μήκος (η Γοργόνα,όχι ο καπετάν-Πάκης) από τον "Πλανήτη",που είναι το μεγαλύτερο από όλα τα σκάφη που κάνουν ημερήσιες εκδρομές από το Πατητήρι.Αν πρόκειται να ταξιδέψετε με κύματα όμως,πράγμα που μπορείτε να μάθετε συμβουλευόμενοι ιστοχώρους όπως το "meteo.gr",θεωρώ ότι είναι καλύτερα να επιβιβασθείτε στον "Πλανήτη". Το μουσείο της Αλοννήσου (λαογραφικό,πειρατικό και Εθνικής μνήμης) στο Πατητήρι αξίζει τα σκαλοπάτια που πρέπει να ανεβείτε για να το επισκεφθείτε. Αξίζει επίσης η επίσκεψη στο παλιό χωριό ή Χώρα.Η Αλόννησος είναι καταπράσινη και έχει όμορφες παραλίες,από τις οποίες συνιστώ τα Γυάλια ή Γυαλιά (πρόσβαση μέσω ομαλού χωματόδρομου) που είναι ένα μικρό φιόρδ με μη οργανωμένη παραλία,με ένα μύλο κτισμένο στη μία άκρη της.Προσοχή όμως,ρωτήστε κάποιον ντόπιο πότε πρέπει να την αποφύγετε,ανάλογα με τον αέρα που φυσάει,διότι αν και ήταν καθαρή όταν την επισκεφθήκαμε,η γειτονική Βρυσίτσα που επίσης επισκεφθήκαμε ήταν βρώμικη, με νερό που δεν βλεπόταν από τα ιζήματα του Αιγαίου.Από τις οργανωμένες,μάς άρεσε περισσότερο το Κοκκινόκαστρο (δεν υπάρχει όμως καμμία υποδομή εστίασης) και ο Άγιος Δημήτριος (έχει μόνο μία καντίνα με τραπεζοκαθίσματα).Αν πάτε στον Μεγάλο Μουρτιά θα πρέπει να παρκάρετε στο πάρκινγκ μίας από τις ταβέρνες,οπότε κάτι πρέπει να αγοράσετε.Η Αλόννησος,αν και θεωρείται από πολλούς κοντινός προορισμός,απέχει 5μισυ ώρες από τον Άγιο Κωνσταντίνο και 3 ώρες από την Κύμη.Από την Κύμη τα ναύλα είναι πιο φθηνά,αλλά πρέπει να υπολογίσετε και τα καύσιμα του...
