Comfortable good value hotel in an ideal location. Right on the sea front and a short walk to the bars and restaurants in one direction, and to a couple of beach bars with sunbeds to hire in the other direction. The small hotel provides a decent buffet breakfast, Brits dedicated to their bacon, sausage and egg will be delighted to hear these are also available for no extra charge. In addition, you'll find fresh bread, jams, supermarket sliced for toasting, Greek yoghurt with dates and figs available (and tinned mixed fruit if you prefer) also runny honey. Cereals too. They even have PG tips tea bags (but UHT milk sadly so I had the tea black). ||The room I had was spacious with a double and a single bed, a pretty large bathroom by Greek standards and a decent shower. Bins emptied daily except Sundays. Ample clothing storage space. Air conditioning is included in the price, and there's a mossie screen to keep the little blighters out. Sufficient electric sockets, TV (not that I switched it on) and a desk/dressing table with a mirror and lights above. ||The side balcony I had was very narrow, if there'd been three of us there it would have been a bit of a squeeze. Nevertheless the view was lovely, and I did enjoy sitting out there in the late afternoon watching the swallows and house martins. No washing line or airer but luckily I brought some pegs and one of those elastic travel lines with me. ||It seemed quiet at night, maybe the occasional dog barking but nothing much. The next door pool wasn't loud or rowdy in the evening (not that I noticed). This is not a Club 18-30 resort so you should get a good nights sleep here. ||In addition, I was a solo traveller and felt quite safe and welcome here. ||Just don't confuse the reviews for this hotel with another Kalypso which various travel companies have linked to their site. Also, the pool next door is a separate business and not included...
Read moreFirst, don't be fooled by the photograph which suggests the hotel has a pool. They use the same photo on the TUI website. The photo is of a pool bar about 2 minutes walk from the hotel and is fine for lying around the pool, getting drinks and food from a decent menu. You will need to budget 10euros per day for an umbrella and two sunbeds and it is best to book as this pool bar is used by people from a number of hotels and self catering places.||As for the Hotel Kalyspo, for a 2* hotel it is basic but really very good. The hotel is very clean including the rooms and we found the accommodation to be very comfortable. Breakfast is served between 8 and 10 and provides for all tastes from a pseudo all- English through continental and Greek dishes.||The hotel opens out onto a road, a pebble beach and the sea and makes for beautiful views. The patio we had on the ground floor was ideal for eating an evening meal. There is a supermarket about 15 minutes walk from the hotel to buy supplies, if like us you like a cheese and wine evening on the patio.||The hotel staff are very friendly, helpful and go out of their way to ensure one has a comfortable holiday.||There are a number of excellent tavernas, a cocktail bar and an excellent ice cream shop which also has a wonderful selection of sweet dishes all within 10 minutes walk from the hotel. We ate out most nights and were not disappointed with any of the tavernas we used. I would however particularly recommend "To Korali" for the quality of the menu and drinks.||It is also easy to walk to the harbour where trips to Zakynthos and Ithica can be booked at reasonable cost.||We travelled with TUI and its worth noting that there was no TUI rep at the hotel for all of our stay. ||If you are looking for peace and tranquility Poros is an ideal spot, if you are a party animal then best...
Read moreWe hadn't planned ahead very much when we decided to go to the Island of Kefalonia. From Athens center it is a three and a half hour bus ride and an hour and a half ferry ride. You can buy the tickets together and it's approximately $90 for two people. We arrived about 6:30 PM, and it was just getting dark. My husband had made reservations and we thought we could walk to the hotel. We soon discovered that we were on the wrong island for the hotel reservations! (We were in the town of Poros. Beware there is a island of Poros also!). The only building open sold bus tickets, and the two gentlemen were very happy to help and called someone to pick us up.. this turned out to be KALYPSO. The young man, John who is the owners son, gave us a lovely room with a balcony, It was just the quiet little town we had hoped for. We could walk to the local coffee shop, which we did every morning after we went to the local bakery, and ate our goods and drank our coffee with the locals in the small little coffee shop within 5 minutes of our room. When we wanted a little bit more adventure John found us a car to rent, as everything is off season and pretty much closed at this point. We went to the capital and over the mountains to the town of Sami. We had the car for 3 days and it was $140. You do have to know how to drive a shift stick, which was not a problem for either my husband or myself. The room at this time was $50 a night. It was a lovely...
