We have just retutrned from 2 glorious weeks in Thasso where we stayed at the Hotel George. It was just what we always look for when we hoilday in Greece and it surpassed our expections. A 10 minute stroll to beautiful Golden beach is very relaxing and you must experience the delicious cuisine at 'Playa Dora' & 'Finikas' (Playa Dora being our personal favourite) you can walk further on towards Skala Potamias for a larger selction of taverna's but these two are a must try. The Hotel George is a lovely peaceful place to stay, set in an olive grove which is charmingly, traditionally greek. It's full of a huge variety of vegetation, wild flowers, herbs etc, truly beautiful! The hotel proprietors Stavros & Karen are very friendly and regaled us with many amusing stories, its very sociable of an evening where a lot of the guests seem to gather for a chat and a night cap to finish the day. Nothing was too much trouble for them in order to make our stay as relaxing as possible. The rooms are on the small side but that's the norm in greece in the main but it was more than adequate for our stay and spotlessly cleaned everyday (except Saturdays). The added touches of slip mats in the bathroom and a shower curtain are a master stroke (as we know only too well that Greece isn't particularly health & safety aware :-) and it can sometimes be quite treacherous when leaving the shower to step onto slippery tiles, so a definite plus point for us. The large balcony offered commanding views of the spectacular mountains and also a sea view through the trees albeit in the distance.A large refrigerator is situated on every floor to keep all your drinks etc in which is very useful. The Air conditioning was the cheapest we have come across in the 15 years we've been holidaying in Greece, which was an added bonus. Breakfasts were more than adequate offering, tea or coffee, a glass of juice everyday, a boiled fresh free range egg one day, and a generous helping of delicious brown bread is on offer everyday, also preserves and butter, a continental breakfast, and the most delicious greek yoghurt and honey i've ever tasted, on certain days, so all in all a nice variety, I have to admit that I was relieved that the usual stale cereal you often get abroad wasn't offered, as invariably cereals abroad taste inferior to our own and that coupled with condensed milk just makes for a breakfast that would be left untouched, so well thought out by the owners. If like us you love everything that is quintessentially greek then the George Hotel is the perfect destination for you. We love it so much in Thasso that we're now thinking of buying a holiday home there at some point. Thanks Stavros and Karen for making our first stay in Thasso such a wonderful experience and i'm sure we will see...
Read moreAlthough well traveled, this was our first time to a Greek Island and boy was it good !! Thassos is a beautiful lush green island, fringed with stunning turquoise sea's. We are a working couple in our 40's so we were after : A relaxed atmosphere, with no fuss, somewhere we could totaly unwind and Hotel George fitted the bill exactly.||With only 10 rooms, you get a very personal and friendly service, plus the benifits of no crowds or noise, so lounging on the sunbeds in the dapple shade of Olive & Fruit trees reading a good book was absolute bliss ! The Hotel itself is immaculate & pristinely clean. Our room had everything we needed, a comfortable bed, tv, wardrobe, balcony with table and chairs and en suite shower room with toilet and sink, along with the use of a shared fridge/freezer. ||Our Hosts were Stavros & Karen who were just wonderful, very helpful and informative. In the mornings you get a enjoyable and varied breakfast, which changes from day to day, anything from duck eggs to Greek yoghurt with Greek honey, fruit juice, fresh bread & coffee and a great starter to any day. In the evenings there is a well stocked bar manned by Stavros, which has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Stavros is a very entertaining character and we loved listening to his humorous tales.||The Hotel is idealy located, being just a short walk to the beautiful sandy beach, various restaurants, shops & taverna's. Our favourite places to eat were Finika's, Playa D'ora & Viglas, the food was just superb and very good value for money.||Other things we can vouch for are the buses, scooter hire (which was a fantastic way to see the island) and the local wine :) We also have a love of ancient stone monuments and history and so we were spoilt for choice with places like Aliki, the Odean in Thassos old town, in fact the old town is just littered with ruins, the more you look the more you find.||Places we would thoroughly recommend visiting are the mountain village of Panagia, truely wonderful and the Secret large rock pool at Giola (Astris) which although difficult to find, is well worth the extra effort, as it is truely stunning and you can swim in it !||||So, to sum up:||Location = Brilliant, Service and hospitality = Brilliant, Cleanliness = Brilliant, Relaxed atmosphere = Brilliant.||||We had a long needed holiday that ticked all the boxes, after 2 weeks, we didn't want to leave and would definately holiday there again. We'd like to say the BIGGEST of Thank you's to Stavros and Karen for making our time there just perfect, on a scale of 1 to 10 you get an 11...
Read moreWe've just got back from 2 weeks at Hotel George. The hotel is a 10 bedroom small hotel offering bed and breakfast. The rooms are small but more than adequate with tv, wi-fi and optional air conditioning. There was a large bathroom with a lovely shower. The rooms were spotlessly clean and cleaned 6 times per week, towels and bed linen was changed twice a week. There was a large fridge/freezer on both landings for guests to use, this was very useful. Breakfast was served on the patio or in the bar, every day you had tea, coffee, juice, fresh bread and jam, fresh fruit and alternating days you would have greek yoghurt, cheese and ham and boiled eggs. We found the breakfast more than adequate and considering what the hoteliers are paid by Thomson what they provide is excellent, I think any complaints should be aimed at Thomson and not Karen and Stavros. Which now brings me to our hosts Karen and Stavros they were a lovely couple with 2 lovely children. Breakfast was always served with a smile and evenings in the bar were always enjoyable. Most of the guests would congregate at the bar after a meal out and as there are only 10 rooms it was a very friendly relaxed atmosphere with Karen and Stavros providing there own entertainment with all there tales and stories. I would say that about 40% of the guests were repeat visitors, so they must be doing something right.||||Golden beach is a lovely resort and as the name says the beach is gorgeous with crystal clear sea. Sunbeds on the beach were free which we found to be quite a saving over 2 weeks.||||There is plenty of choice for places to eat with Finikas and Playa d'Ora being the most popular in Golden Beach. We were paying approx 25-30 euro's for a meal with drinks. There is a posh Hotel just down the Rd from Hotel George, I think it was called Enavilon, it is well worth a visit for a bit of fine dining, we paid 37 euro's with drinks so it was still very reasonable. One restaurant with spectacular views of the bay is Vigli, unfortunatley the view was all we got to see as we walked out on 2 occasions because the service was atrocious. ||||A 30 minute stroll away is Skala Potamia, this is a much livlier resort with lots of choice of places to eat and drink. There are some lovley restaurants along the seafront as you walk into the resort, Green Sea and Fivlos being our favourite.||||Golden beach has a good regular bus service and the village of Panagia is well worth a visit in the evening.||||We hired a car for the day and travelled the entire island, the roads were very...
