What a lovely surprise. After a recommendation we ended up in Hotel Peneleu. The -I think- daughter of the owner gave us a tour on the property and showed us the rooms. We had a normal private room for 60Q per night, which is the cheapest room we have had in or 2.5 months travel. There are also rooms with a beautiful lake view, for which you had to pay 80Q (still super cheap.) ||The hotel looked nice and well maintained. It had the common electrical wire shower which they have everywhere in central america and two beds which felt comfortable. The owner family is really nice, even tough they don't speak really good English. You see them trying to make a good business. We liked it here so much after our first two night we decided to stay a week while doing some Spanish courses.||||Later we talked about this hotel with a Guatemalan woman married to a Dutch guy, and she told us families like this just name a price they think sounds nice instead of really having an idea what having a hotel costs. They forget the expenses on the hotel just to make you stay there for any price you think is reasonable. So keep that in mind. This is a lovely, hard working, bit poor Mayan family trying really hard. Even tough we made that mistake, try not to talk the rooms down to 60Q or even less. They are worth at least 100Q, which is still really cheap, but a lot better for the family.||||Nevertheless, lovely stay! Stay with this nice family in this nice,...
Read moreGreat Value. I write this from my room-with-a-great-view on 6/24/2022. I paid 70 Quetzals for single room that I promised to keep for 4 nights but did not otherwise bargain for. It's directly off the second floor veranda. Rear and lower rooms are cheaper. My room is basic but nice enough. The WIFI is good but not great. The room has a wooden set of shelves, a somewhat fancy wood headboard, a typical Guatemalan bedspread and a reasonably attractive set of curtains. The verandas are downright huge and have hammocks, tables, chairs and outlets. There's also a dining area and a, reasonably well equipped kitchen in which basic meals could be cooked. It's really not very far from the main tourist areas, barely a 10 minute walk, and it's close to the main market. The bathroom is a bit grungy but the water gets warm enough (not exactly hot). A a little more attention to detail would be nice, like, why not have lids for the bathroom trash and more trash cans spread throughout the hotel. but I don't find that I need it much. There's a young woman is downright rude but the elderly man is nice. No one speaks any English. I would come back, especially if I was going to camp out for 5 days as I...
