What a lovely surprise. After a recommendation we ended up in Hotel Peneleu. The -I think- daughter of the owner gave us a tour on the property and showed us the rooms. We had a normal private room for 60Q per night, which is the cheapest room we have had in or 2.5 months travel. There are also rooms with a beautiful lake view, for which you had to pay 80Q (still super cheap.) ||The hotel looked nice and well maintained. It had the common electrical wire shower which they have everywhere in central america and two beds which felt comfortable. The owner family is really nice, even tough they don't speak really good English. You see them trying to make a good business. We liked it here so much after our first two night we decided to stay a week while doing some Spanish courses.||||Later we talked about this hotel with a Guatemalan woman married to a Dutch guy, and she told us families like this just name a price they think sounds nice instead of really having an idea what having a hotel costs. They forget the expenses on the hotel just to make you stay there for any price you think is reasonable. So keep that in mind. This is a lovely, hard working, bit poor Mayan family trying really hard. Even tough we made that mistake, try not to talk the rooms down to 60Q or even less. They are worth at least 100Q, which is still really cheap, but a lot better for the family.||||Nevertheless, lovely stay! Stay with this nice family in this nice,...

Great Value. I write this from my room-with-a-great-view on 6/24/2022. I paid 70 Quetzals for single room that I promised to keep for 4 nights but did not otherwise bargain for. It's directly off the second floor veranda. Rear and lower rooms are cheaper. My room is basic but nice enough. The WIFI is good but not great. The room has a wooden set of shelves, a somewhat fancy wood headboard, a typical Guatemalan bedspread and a reasonably attractive set of curtains. The verandas are downright huge and have hammocks, tables, chairs and outlets. There's also a dining area and a, reasonably well equipped kitchen in which basic meals could be cooked. It's really not very far from the main tourist areas, barely a 10 minute walk, and it's close to the main market. The bathroom is a bit grungy but the water gets warm enough (not exactly hot). A a little more attention to detail would be nice, like, why not have lids for the bathroom trash and more trash cans spread throughout the hotel. but I don't find that I need it much. There's a young woman is downright rude but the elderly man is nice. No one speaks any English. I would come back, especially if I was going to camp out for 5 days as I...

Cheap as chips, room without view 20q or maybe $3us.. another girl had bottom room with view for 25 & couple on top balcony paid 50q together. | My room is spacious with loo & shower, & all important kitchen facilities for the budget. It's not in high season so not many people here. Prices might be 5q or so more in high season. Plenty of rooms, close to 30.|Alberto & Domingo are the owners - Alberto's brother Nicolas rents kayaks cheap over near Pana dock, just past sublime.|To find hotel from iglesia/church & chickenbus dropoff, walk UP street chuch faces. This is where the food markets are in the mornings. At either road left halfway up or left at top corner before the bank, turn & go down, they join back up before you see hotel sign above road. 5min walk.|From pana dock - At 1st intersection turn left, maybe 500m road ends, 100m before there is a narrow alley on right behind casa lola, follow main narrow track through bends (without taking roads up) for another 500m or so. When you get to a wider main road (lanchas to santiago Atitlán at bottom, town at top) go up 300m, you will see sign for hotel...

This hotel is a definite five stars for the money. We paid around 100Qs per night, it is very reasonable for that. Expect fantastic views and hammocks from the terrace. Also expect rooms with low sound proofing and a very basic bathroom/shower. I cannot complain for the money, the staff and owners are friendly and location is ok, it actually makes for an enjoyable walk through the alleyways/interesting neighbourhood where you are slightly away from the main strip and get to experience the street art and friendly locals when walking back and forth to the lake. It is definitely not a strenuous walk and you have all amenities close by such as shops, laundry, tour agencies and Tuk Tuks around if you need them. It is close to a nice park shown in my photos.

Great hotel with large rooms, private bathrooms, shared kitchen & amazing common terrace with lake view. The rooms have all you need, a king size bed (and some also a single bed), blankets if you get cold & a spacious bathroom with hot water. The kitchen is fine, but could definitely use new pans and pots (this is why I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars). Though we were able to cook simple dishes. We paid 90Q per night for 2 people by booking directly at the place. It’s big, with over 20 rooms so I think you’ll be fine if you just show up and reserve or call in advance (you can find them on Booking). Also, wifi works really well: best I’ve found in Central America I could argue. I was really pleased to have found this place 😊

I can't say enough about this place. Alberto Peneleu (The owner) is a complete legend. He made us feel so incredibly welcome here. He was happy to share his wealth of information with us. 6 generations of his family have had this land. You are not lining the pockets of some Expat when staying here. The view from our room was Next Level! The room itself was basic but awesome! The place reminds me of the way I remember traveling to be. Also close to the Market so you can get your food and other essentials. Far enough away from the backpacker strip. Enjoy!
