The staff here are truly wonderful. Nothing is too much effort and everyone is ready to help with a big smile. A particularly huge thanks to Aussie for being brilliant.
I've stayed here in two different rooms types.
The private pool garden villa (room 1111) needed some maintenance and was a bit tired in places, but with some simple work could be absolutely lovely. This gets 8/10 from me, but could easily become a 9.5 given how incredibly friendly and welcoming the front of house team are.
However, anything in first half of "block 5" (room 3101) would get a 3/10 simply on the basis of noise. It's right by a main road and not very soundproofed. The room is appointed well and is on par with expectation for a 5* hotel. The team did manage to move me to another room after a bit of back and forth. Room 3121 was much better for noise, but instead suffered from a smell of damp in the air-conditioning. I took this as the lesser of two evils, as it's pretty common in older tropical resorts. Turns out the mattress in this room was very old, as it had huge craters where bodies have been sleeping for years.
You may also be unlucky enough to be miles away from the facilities (on the other side of the noisy road) in one of their outbuildings.
Generally, I believe that the hotel has overstretched its room capacity when compared to its facilities. Dinner is only served in one restaurant, which had no space for some of my fellow guests when they arrived at 8pm. I don't understand why, when at full occupancy, they wouldn't open their second outlet for dinner or add tables into their "wedding venue" to expand capacity.
That said, the food at dinner was mostly good, with a decent wine list and friendly, professional service. It's a shame the chef randomly swapped ingredients around from what was shown on the menu without checking with me - resulting in me having allergens on my plate.
Exactly the same issues at breakfast - some guests had a long wait for a table. Apparently the hotel offers FOC room service as an alternative to buffet breakfast, but this wasn't made clear. Perhaps a little breakfast menu card on the bed on arrival would help with this. Once again, friendly staff and decent food were on standby eventually!
Getting an appointment at the spa at a preferred time (or, indeed, same-day) was pretty difficult too - it seemed fully booked for many convenient times. However, the team happily WhatsApped me when another guest cancelled and that was appreciated. BUT then... I had an appointment and turned up on time, but then they weren't ready for me - I had to leave fifteen minutes later (no treatment) as there wouldn't have been time to get it done before dinner.
Lastly, the capacity at the pool feels a bit like a 3* package holiday resort - very crammed in loungers with no sense of privacy or for anyone, and lots of people looking for somewhere to sit. There was no water service and no offer of a menu or a drink at any time. The infinity pool itself is lovely and well maintained.
If you are careful about room choices, and go outside of peak season when it's not full, you'll have a gorgeous time here because the staff are great and the place has a lovely vibe. Otherwise, it's nice and pleasant but just seems to miss the mark of being...
Read moreMy checkout process was frustrating which didn't help in my opinion of the hotel in general. I approached one of the receptionist, Tari, who asked me how she could help. I said I was checking out and wanted to settle my bill. She asked if I had anything from the minibar to which I replied yes, the peanuts. She said she had to send someone to check before issuing the invoice. Taken aback, because why ask if you had to check anyways, I said I'd rather pay the invoice now so I can get back to the pool (they have my card on file, my luggage, and I was spending the rest of the day at the hotel). She then says she had to attend to this couple over there first. Surprised, I reminded her that she was in the middle of serving me! She gave me an excuse that the couple has been waiting to check in before I got there. I was shocked at how rude it was to put me on hold halfway in. She could've said so from the beginning and ask me to wait, instead of initiating service. She then came back with the invoice, including the peanuts bag I had mentioned. This was really not necessary, and made me, as a guest who is spending thousands of dollars on my stay here, feel devalued and disrespected. The way she pivoted to another strategy instead of just explaining that was the protocol or something along those lines, like a professional in hospitality, made it look like a cheap attempt at outsmarting her way out of it. The security guards were another joke of a 5 star-service. After spending 8 days at the hotel, every single time I entered (that was multiple times a day!) they would rush or follow me asking: are you staying with us? with a tone of worried panic. Yes I stay with you. It took everything I had not to turn around towards the end and say: No, I'm just walking in planning to rob your guests! What do you think? I've had my share of 5-star resorts in Asia and around the world. Never have I been so annoyed by the incompetence and lack of hospitality from the hotel staff.
Besides the grounds which are incredibly nicely done, with a beautiful swimming pool, this hotel doesn't have much to offer. One restaurant, Sanje, caters to the whole hotel (the breakfast restaurant is closed for the rest of the day after breakfast, go figure). The choices provided are limited in number and the taste mediocre at best, highly overpriced for what you get. Last order is 9.30pm, leaving you no other choice but room service (which it the same limited menu). This might explain why the guards are so adamant in asking this one specific question, probably because other than hotel guests, no one would bother coming in to eat there. All is all, it was ok. But if I had to visit again I would definitely stay somewhere else with better culinary options and a staff that's more welcoming and professional. There's so many nice hotels along...
