Hotel Arthur Beppu — Hotel in Beppu

Do take note that while you will be conveniently located near the necessary places to get food, bars, malls, major train station and bus stop, you are a bit far from most tourist spots. Beppu is serviced by 2 bus companies and getting a day pass (700yen "Beppu Free" for Kamenoi Bus) would be most useful.||||By western standards, the rooms are small, but if you have stayed in hotels in Japan, you know that space is a luxury and this hotel's rooms are a little bit bigger than the usual, esp. if you are in a single-bed room.||||Breakfast is served on the 10th floor, giving you a more than 180 degree view (there are very few tall buildings around the hotel) facing the mountain side. you can also view a part of the ocean. If breakfast is not included in your hotel package, then it would set you back 1,000yen(+5% tax). You can choose between a Japanese or Western set; and in addition, drinks, bread, salad, yogurt are included as a complementary buffet. I tried both sets, and they were both good, but if you are a health buff or would want to try Japanese breakfast, then go for the Japanese one.||||I am not sure if the staff use English because I speak Japanese.||||There is Wi-fi in the hotel, limited access to 10minutes for 2 times per day. but the odd thing is you need an e-mail address to register and confirm first, but you need internet to do that (?!?) anyway, there are computers, scanners, printers, photocopiers available for a fee. there is also LAN available in the rooms.||||There is a vending machine in the lobby that serves free drinks (limited kinds) in the morning. I can't remember exactly the time it starts and stops vending because I always just hung out in the breakfast area with the beautiful view instead, where i likewise enjoyed free-flowing coffee, milk, and hot chocolate!||||Finally, there are public baths available in the early morning and afternoon. The first twin room given to us was next to the elevator and clearly was the smallest room in the hotel. As soon as we saw the room, we asked for a larger room but the staff said there was none available for our first night. After much discussion, the desk clerks let us upgrade, for an additional fee, to a larger room for our next three nights but we spent the first night in the tiny room. There was so much furniture taking up so much floor space that it was almost impossible to find room to open one suitcase, let alone two. It was nearly impossible for two people to move around the room at the same time. Our second room, was a corner twin room and was very much larger than the other one. There were two windows and the room had plenty of light. The wired internet in the room worked just fine. I think we would have been miserable if we had to spend four nights in that first room. Our rating is based primarily on our newer, larger room, but we had to consider the small crowded room as well.||||Although the staff spoke little English, there was one gentleman upon whom they were able to call who had excellent English and who was very pleasant in responding to our requests and questions. The rest of the staff were quite reserved, possibly because they were nervous about dealing with English speaking clients.||||We left an item behind and tried to contact the hotel by email. Our messages went unanswered - perhaps because of the language issue. When we arrived in Nagasaki several days later, we had the concierge telephone Hotel Arthur to arrange for the return of our item. We were pleased that it had been saved - it been 3 days since we departed. We paid for the shipping and Hotel Arthur forwarded it to us and it arrived in two days.
