The very last night of my four night stay here, something very suspicious happened and the staff did absolutely nothing about it.
Were it not for this incident, I would easily rate this hotel 4-5 stars for the spacious rooms, washing machine, and great location in Tenjin, but also very close to Canal City.
I went into the lift to go up my room, and when you swipe the key, it automatically selects your floor. You cannot access floors above 1-2 without a key card. You can access 1st and 2nd floor without a card, because 1st is ground level entrance, and 2nd is reception.
An older man came into the lift, he kept touching his key repeatedly pressing 6th floor but it didn’t work. Unfortunately I didn’t see clearly if he was holding a Tokyu Stay keycard. I already pressed my floor (3rd) before he came in. As a woman travelling alone, I’m always vigilant of my surroundings. Even in Japan. When I got off my floor, I went the wrong direction as not to give off which room I’m staying. After a few seconds, I went back to the direction of my room, to see the old man still in the lift, and he got out when he saw me. As soon as he got out, I jumped back in the lift, closed it immediately, and went to reception on 2nd to notify them about this incident.
I don’t think I was being paranoid. If you are a staying guest, and your key stopped working, you would go to the reception to ask for help, instead of following another guest onto their floor. Especially since you can access the second floor without a key. He literally got off when he saw me and pretended to wander around my floor. Really suspicious behaviour.
I notified the reception staff. I understand there is a language barrier, and I do not demand everyone to speak English whenever I travel. So I typed about the incident quite clearly through google translate. The female staff nodded and notified her colleague, they talked about it and literally just looked at me blankly, not giving any assurance or resolution. After a few minutes at reception, the old man was still nowhere to be seen! Shouldn’t he be at reception when his “key” didn’t work? He could be a paying guest with dementia, he could be a thief, he could be anything! The staff didn’t care at all.
I was quite livid deep down, but I didn’t want to make a scene and I still had things to do. So I went back upstairs, and made sure the coast was clear before entering my room.
If you are a woman travelling by yourself, I do not recommend this hotel at all! The staff clearly doesn’t care about...
Read moreThis is literally one of the dirtiest hotels I've ever stayed in (see pics). We chose this soley because of its in-room laundry and I understand it's a 3 star hotel, and that they do not have daily house keeping or a lot of amenities. That's totally fine with us but they need to clean between guests and also common area once in a while. Like some of the 'buried' reviews stated, the rooms are beyond dirty. Layer of dust on surfaces and vents, mold on the bathroom vents and sink, there are multiple stains on the floor and the lid of the trash can is sticky so you cant use it. Everytime you move around you can see dust flying around. Same for the common area, there are dirt and brown marks all over walls and elevators, as was in room.
I'm not sure who would call this hotel modern or clean - the rooms haven't been renovated for properly 20 yrs except for the bathroom and laundry. Ceiling is so low and dark. 'Rain shower' head has stains all over, and our room had a weird food smell coming out of the sink or behind the fridge (even though there was no other room next to us on that side. All your clean laundry now smells like food. The hotel doesn't have central air in the room and uses individual AC unit from the 80s. The AC is blowing dust and wind right in your face even at the lowest setting - I got sick after a night here either from dirtiness or the wind, and nose is congested from dust whenever I'm in room.
This is totally unacceptable on the cleanliness level, especially by Japanese standard. I've stayed in hostels cleaner than this. Worse, the official site is charging 54,000yen a night on avg for the larger room even with the early bird 28 days discount during our stay. That's way more expensive than even some Tokyo 4 or 5 star hotel like what is going on, I'd expect it at least to be clean. The only good thing is the staffs were fairly nice at check in (but at check-out they also claim they couldn't order us a taxi but there were tons just driving down the main street empty so we caught one in 5 min) and the in-room laundry does work.
We initially had booked another Tokyu Stay so we can do laundry again later on our trip, but we've had to cancel it as I'd rather buy new shirts than deal with this again. Not sure if this is a chain wide issue or...
Read moreWe stayed at this business hotel for several days and had a mixed experience, perhaps due to our expectations. We originally booked a double room. After stepping into the space -- a third floor room with stained carpet and couch overlooking a parking lot with one side of the bed next to a wall and the other with less than half a meter of space around it -- asked if there were other options. We were then shown to a much larger double room on the top floor with a great view of the cityscape, a washer/dryer combo, great shower and soaking tub bathroom with a separate space for the sink and modern Japanese-style toilet. This room was double the price, but as we needed more space for this stay -- especially a larger desk -- we shifted and don't regret that. The room had a mini-fridge, kettle, and a few cups and glasses, which was helpful for a longer-term stay. There is no housekeeping in the hotel unless you pay an additional approximately $12 USD per day; for stays longer than 5 days they will do it automatically. The issue of cleanliness comes up when seeing how many stains were on the carpet and couch. (Yes, one can certainly throw the towels in the washing machine but decoding the machine does take time!) Staff were at times overwhelmed by having English-speaking customers, however all were sufficiently intrepid to use translation apps when there was a need for clarification; after a few tries, they were able to assist with forwarding our luggage to the next destination and timely assistance with a restaurant reservation. On the (very) plus side, the location of the hotel is fantastic, with easy access to great restaurants, coffee, bus routes, the riverside, and everything else Fukuoka has to offer. We might still opt to stay here on another visit, but would bring a) less expectations, and b)...
