After an exceptional stay at Hakone's top rated Ryokan Gora Byakudan, Mr. Uchida, the assistant manager who currently works there recommended Gen Hakone Gora as a second alternative since we were unable to book an additional night due to its popularity. We truly appreciated his exceptional level of service and his cander for catering to our needs and were completely confident that Gen Hakone, a sister company of Gora Byakudan would emulate the same level of warmth and customer service experience if we were to stay there. As ryokan addicts who have literally stayed in all of the luxury 5 star ryokans within the Hakone/Atami/Izu area, Gen Hakone is now the first on our best ryokan list. Our number one luxury getaway, our ideal home away from home.||Katosan, one of their staff members left us with such a lasting impression throughout our stay with her exceptional level of hospitality and professional demeanor, she now is also one of the many reasons why we have frequented this establishment and is planning to continue to do so from here on forward.||FACILITY:||The facility itself is very mindful of their clienteles from seniors to the physically challenged. With barrier-free rooms, ease of accessibility to the public baths, wheelchair lifts and elevators provided, we can bring our grandmother free of sentiments of anxiety or discomfort.||AMENITY:||Unique and well-thought out amenities such as chilled tangerines which are provided to soothe your skin after a detox session in their sauna and large misty and perfectly temperature controlled bathing area. Dr. Air massage chairs, ice popsicles, detox water, and nostalgic sweet water beverage which were placed in the resting area generated another element of surprise. Public baths were equipped with large and small towels, water dispenser, tooth brush, a wide range of shampoo and conditioners to choose from and every essential bathing necessities that you could ask for. Rooms were provided with everything from complimentary beverages, delicious sencha teas, Balmuda kettles, aromatic high quality shampoos and conditioners, chilled desserts, large outdoor bathtub with heavenly views of the Gora mountains, high tech dryers, and the list goes on. The lobby area offered complimentary beverages and a unique selection of teas from Yuzu sencha to Honey Ceylon throughout the day and from 8pm alcoholic beverages from Whisky, shochu, craft beer and small treats were generously layed out in bar area.||ROOMS:||The rooms were exceptionally large, approximately 115m/ 1300 sq ft, one of the biggest rooms that we have ever stayed in, especially through Hakone's standards. The open concept room were equipped with many seating options from comfortable dining room area that can seat approximately 10 people, L shaped sofa, comfy double beds, multiple lighting capabilities to customize the ambiance to your likings, wall fixtures with numerous outlets placed in convenient locations, a showering area with rainfall shower option, a spectacular veranda and kakenagashi ofuro tub facing majestic views of the Hakone mountainside. Although large in size, the room was inviting, perfectly lit and extremely comfortable. Both my mother and I slept like babies throughout our stay here.||FOOD:||Spectacular. The quality and attention to detail of Chef Osamu's cooking surpassed our expectations. Kaiseki cuisine with a creative twist that places an element of surprise that comes with each and every dish. From the best asari miso soup with the depth of the dashi permeating your tongue, wagyu beef that instantaneously dissipates leaving its natural sweetness, and the rice was by far the best that we have ever tasted.||Unlike many other cookie cutter franchised establishments that we have been to, we want to thank the owner, assistant manager Mr. Uchida, Katosan and the rest of the team for creating a ryokan that truly embodies the notion and the soul of...

Wanted to stay at a hotel with a private onsen during our stay in Hakone. The room itself was absolutely amazing. Super comfortable and I loved the tatami floor and the big balcony overlooking the hills. I could go on forever talking about how beautiful and spacious the room was. Lighting is very important to me and Gen Hakone got this perfectly, even having LED colour changing bulbs incase you want a cooler/warmer tone to the room.||My only problem with the room is the shower. It is cool that the shower cubicle connects to both the bedroom and outside next to the onsen tub so you could step out of the shower and into the tub. However, this design might not be the best for cold winters as the glass could barely keep in the heat. We had a chilly evening when we went and if I stood close to the shower, I felt the chill. The plastic on the shower door that keeps the water in was loose so water can leak out onto the floorboards in the bedroom. I could already see the water damage on the floorboards so perhaps this should be fixed otherwise it will create a problem in the long term.||The design for each room might be a little different but I found it a little strange that one of the beds is literally next to the shower cubicle. The room has floor to ceiling windows including the shower cubicle so how do they keep the light out in the morning when you are still sleeping? There is a blackout blind that separates the bed and the shower cubicle at night which runs all the way to the sliding door that separates the bedroom and living area. However, don't expect a total blackout as the design of the room cannot cover all the places where light shines.||The kaiseki dinner was very delicious but I loved the breakfast more. It was huge and filling and such a great experience! The room price was extortionate but the beauty of the room plus the food kind of pays off for it.||In terms of quality of service, this was also top-notch. Although staff didn't speak the best English, they tried their best to deliver their messages and we really appreciated their efforts. They immediately respond to pick-up requests when we called or emailed them. We had a little blip on arrival when we expected them to pick us up at Gora station but they werent there. It turns out that when we emailed them about our arrival time and requested for pick up prior to the trip, it doesn't actually secure a reservation, it's just giving them a heads up. So if you require them to pick you up from Gora station, give them a call when you arrive and they will come within 5 minutes. They can also drop you off or pick you up at particular points too but best communicate with them on that when you are there. ||The hotel is minute away from Naka Gora tram station which makes its very convenient to travel to the ropeway station and Gora station.||Overall, we had a wonderful stay at Gen Gora and wish to extend our gratitude to the staff and their...

There are many many things wrong with this hotel, and if you are reading this TRUST ME, don't come here. TLDR: Very sloppy planning, bad food, old and dated building, heavy mold in the bathroom, and MORE. First of all we had one of the more expensive suites (SEN suite) which was around €1250 per night. The elevator there felt old, used and unsafe (from the 80s), like I'm in the ghetto. All the halls stink of old fish, because they serve the food within the halls. Days before we checked in, they asked about food we like and don't like. I clearly wrote that my girlfriend does not like fish, and does not eat it. We arrive, our first meal comes: Fish broth, eel, crab, sashimi, clams, and more. They said these aren't fish, just other sea food. Clearly, someone who does not like fish, does not like fishy food. How disrespectful? Second of all (I myself, love fish) the food was HORRIBLE. I am someone that can eat a 10 course culinary meal, aswell as a simple food, I am not a food snob and I am never picky with food. I like any and all food, but trust me when I say this felt like they found dog food in an old cabinet and threw something together. Every food was SLIMY JELLY VINEGARED WEIRDNESS, and the chefs SHOULD be fired. This was the worst culinary experience of my life, I cut the experience short at our fifth round and said we are full. It was THAT bad. I wouldn't let my dog eat it. How can even the Japanese reviews I've read say that this does not even come close to Japanese food, and that they feel sad for the westerners thinking it's their food. And then the food options: There is NO other food available, no restaurants in or around the hotel, no room service options for food. You just starve and go to sleep hungry. So much for your "5 star suite experience" Then the MOLD (which I will attach in this review) the bathroom had HEAVY mold which stinked up the entire bathroom and was a health hazard, this literally means they DO NOT clean the bathrooms. Also breakfast time were either at 8:00 at 8:30 these choices, room cleaning can come latest 13:30, the shuttle are at annoying times. This does not come close to a luxury 5 star experience. Any and every hotel I've stayed in let's you choose your times, the Edition in Tokyo, the W hotel in Osaka both had the option to receive room cleaning at any time. Your private onsen is not private, people from surrounding hotel can LOOK DIRECTLY in your onsen and bathroom, the blinds that close do not hide you from the people around the other hotels. The onsen is TOO hot and doesn't cool down with the cooling down button. This was a dissapointment. If this were a 3-4 star hotel that costed me €100 euro per night, then I would be like this hotel is "OKAY". It's FINE at best. But for €1250 per night, I feel like I was scammed, I feel disrespected and cheated.

It's been almost a month since I visited Gen but that's irrelevant as my time here was unforgettable. My wife and I initially thought that the stay was a little expensive but we later found out that it's worth every penny. We informed the staff that it was our anniversary and the staff provided a small gift for us which was very kind. The room we stayed in was Kei and it was beautiful. The modern decor gave it a very inviting feeling. The open air bath was a little strange at first but to be able to enjoy the hot spring in an outdoor setting was very nice. It also felt very private. The window faces east so it was quite beautiful to wake up to the sun rising over the mountain. We easily enjoyed the sunrise while soaking in the onsen bath. I am a bit strange where I don't like to eat seafood. The staff at Gen was able to accommodate a special menu for me while my wife enjoyed the usual kaiseki dinner. I didn't expect much but chef Osamu Okawa delivered amazing dishes. I had an exceptional Kobe steak dish that felt unrivaled to any other I've had in my time in Japan. The public onsen in the basement was also very well kept. If you go late enough you can have the whole place, along with the sauna, to yourself. I highly recommend staying at Gen and would not hesitate to go there if i return to Hakone.

Usually we stay at the Hyatt Regency whenever we visit Hakone. This October trip we decided to try something different and stayed at the Gen. While the Japanese service is always great and this place is no different, the biggest problem I found that will keep me away from this hotel is the mold! Yes I found black mold all over the water sprouts of the shower head when I tried to bathe my baby 😓. It was late at night so I had no choice but trying to clean the mold as much as I could myself. I knew that if there is mold on the surface of the shower head, it must be all moldy inside. So I tried to run the hottest water after I used tons of tissue wiped the shower head 😭 I think my baby still got sick from inhaling some mold while I was cleaning. He had runny nose and cough for almost two weeks after we got back from the Japan trip. Another issue is that yes you have a private onsen in your room, but the balcony is open to the valley where there are a lot of buildings, so there is no privacy when soaking in the onsen 😓 Because we checked in at a rainy night so I didn’t realize the privacy issue the next morning…
