The food was very good, and was the best part of the trip. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the onsen. The men's and women's baths are limited to a side-by-side standard bath and a "milky" bath. During our trip, the cold tap on the bath faucet for the milky bath was stuck on, and it was lukewarm that evening and downright unpleasant the next morning.
There are no outdoor baths, family baths or private baths, there isn't even an onsen towel to take home and add to your collection. Just two perfunctory baths, one of which was uncomfortably cold during my visit. For the price this place charges, and it's not cheap, that's unacceptable.
Regarding the food, it's "Italian". Italian in the sense that it's the kind of Italian you'd be served at a wedding factory where the fake church and reception dinner are on different floors of the same building. That's not a complaint, just the best way I know of to explain what you're getting, which was the best part of the stay.
Complementary coffee is available near the main desk at checkin, but you can only get coffee with breakfast in the morning.
I get that some Japanese may tire of the traditional onsen experience. Give me a outdoor bath, family bath and/or private bath with an onsen towel, and maybe the Italian meal would be a nice twist on tradition.
Unfortunately, a single working bath ruined the trip. Mentioning this at the front desk lead to a hastily scribbled note and a, "We're so sorry. We hope you don't catch a cold."
While I've only stayed at 8 ryokan from 2000 onward, this is definitely in the bottom half. For what we paid, definitely a...
