I just stayed here two weeks ago, after my original visit two years ago. I somehow had the entire ryokan all to myself thanks to visiting in the off-off-season between weekends. Not only did I have two Nakamura-obaachans, but also the ryokan tailored all to myself. I stayed in a similar room compared to the first one, at half the price. With better wifi reception too!
Absolutely amazing. I loved every moment. This was a tremendously authentic ryokan experience, with a rich, soothing, relaxing onsen bath at the end of long, rainy, tiring days exploring Hakone. The location is perfect, the hotel staff absolutely unbelievably welcoming, the breakfast rich and hearty, the service amazingly diligent, and my ability to describe the visit almost beyond compare. I've spent a full month in Japan now, through rain and sun, through cloud and fog, through seaside and mountaintop, from Kagoshima to Sapporo, from calm to earthquake, by rail, bus, plane, car, taxi, subway, and foot. I've seen more of Japan than most Japanese. I've been through more of Japan than almost anyone else in the world.
This. This is the place to stay if you want the true Japan experience. Everything I said in my original review remains. Everything in this new review is amplified. I love this place. I never want it to change, but it must, in time. See it and stay in it while you can.
May the Hakone Onsen Sanso Nakamura have many, many more happy years. I love this place beyond words.
Best ryokan and hotel experience I've had in my wide travels of Japan. Put on your best "Gaijin who knows some Japanese and customs" face, and they'll love you for it. Be respectful, follow their instructions, and you'll have the friendliest staff this side of the Pacific.
The hot springs bath facilities are great and rotated on a daily basis, the bathrooms are well-provisioned and rarely used even if they're communal, and the breakfasts are absolutely marvelous. If you treat the staff with respect and care, they will treat you with amazingly friendly service.
The area is beautiful, and even the smallest rooms are provisioned wonderfully. There's WiFi in the lobby and lounge areas, and there's a personal keyed safe in every room. I'd recommend this to anyone staying in the area....

This property is thoroughly overpriced. We paid A$180/night. We didn’t even get a bed. They supplied a 5 cm thick mat(no mattress) for each of us and my partner and I ended up with excruciating back pains! The pictures supplied at the Agoda app only showed rooms with beds and mattresses! There were no chairs in the bedroom and as we are in our sixties, it was incredibly uncomfortable. No on suite, wash basins were in the hallway, no privacy whatsoever. Only shower was in the public onsen! Toilets were shared! Unbelievable for such a price tag! Location was remote and accessibility was difficult and up a steep hill. There was a policy pointed out in the information booklet supplied, that you can’t bring any food or drink into your room and that you you have to remove all your rubbish from the property yourself! Absolutely incredible! Pricing for food in the property was very high compared to other places we stayed at in Japan. The closest restaurant was about 800 meters distant down the steep hill! The staff were reasonably friendly, but we had the impression of the owner being a smiling assassin and they don’t hardly speak anything but Japanese! Very poor effort for an internationally acclaimed tourist destination! This is not a negative comment but just a warning for future references - the onsen was at times below the requested temperature and my partner wore some of her silver jewellery in the onsen and it turned black. A warning sign would be appropriate.
Hope this will assist future potential clients in their choices, we will definitely never stay...
Read more(Stayed at the ryokan in July 2016, this review is long overdue apologies)||The ryokan is situated somewhere further in, which would require taking the public transport bus from whichever train station to a nearby stop to walk in (just slightly below 5mins stroll). Wonderful scenery and has the local community is much different to enjoy as compared to the hustle of the city.||||The ryokan's staff gave a very warm welcome, got checked in quickly and was shown to the room (which had a nice view down a slope) and an orientation around the ryokan. The lady staff also gave instructions on how to grab some food around the area and gave advice on the operating hours of the nearby shops. ||||Additional the washroom and basin is shared among with the other roommates on the same floor. With another one for those living on the 2nd floor. Does bring back memories of staying at hall, though might not be convenient if you prefer more privacy.||||While the ryokan is slightly secluded from the shops and the main district, it does have a lovely traditional feel to its look. On to the onsen, slightly smaller as compared to commercial ones in the city but has a windowed view of the forestry outside. ||||The ryokan provided futons (mattress type) to sleep in, adds to the traditional feel. Which is a pleasant change over sleeping on a elevated bed, and does not feel uncomfortable as some might...
