La Foret (Hakone Highland Hotel) — Restaurant in Hakone

Disclaimer: this review is only for the dinner, the breakfast was fantastic and it was seriously the top 3 cup of coffee I've ever had. So I decided to treat myself to a nice solo dinner during my travels and thought this would be a great place. I will say the food is good, but for the price, you would expect more. The tuna appetizer was great but just small slabs, maybe 2-3oz total. The charcoal beef was very good but just needed a little seasoning to really bring the meat alive. Overall the food was a solid 4 taste wise but the price really dictates more. The biggest complaint was the drinks. The wine was way too fruity for red meat and the mixed cocktail whiskey drinks were just way too sweet (plus an ungodly amount of ice, I couldn't even sip the thing). I had some Yamazaki neat but I wanted to try some of the craft cocktails that I could enjoy with my meal (the wine was really a let down, I didn't cheap out). After dinner I tried the house red Merlot which would be on par with a CVS/Aldi wine that ran me 17 bucks. I really wish I knew about the vending machine downstairs that had beer in it. Beautiful location, but be aware it’s mostly for hotel guests. We saw it on google and thought it was a stand alone restaurant. Turns out it’s in the hotel and we got confronted by a staff and asked repeatedly “do you have a reservation? Where are you going?” As we replied that we were looking for the cafe. Probably our fault but definitely we’re not happy with the treatment of people trying to provide business to the cafe. We were given a very expensive dessert and coffee menu and there were 0 nut allergy...

Rightly priced. Nice onsen. Super friendly staff. The vicinities of the Hakone Highland Hotel are dotted with tourist facilities and are a perfect starting point for travel in the area.
