We payed almost 600€ per night of the experience in a Japanese styled room with a private onsen and a meal plan. The description said that there would be a bar and a restaurant as well as a beautiful garden path to take a stroll in the yukatas provided by the premises. There were also high reviews on the quality of the meals.||It turned out there was no bar, no restaurant, no karaoke, nothing. The garden path was a boring forest path around the premises with no other landscape other than the industrial-like facilities of the ryokan. The minibar only had a few overpriced beverages, so we had to go to the Family Mart nearby to buy drinks and food.|But why did we want drinks and food if the reservation included a dinner and a breakfast? Because they were BAD. They were beautiful visually but there was absolutely no flavor. Everything was bland, cold and mushy and the only drinks were one small glass of wine in the dinner menu and one tiny glass of juice in the breakfast menu. We were aware that the menu would be a traditional Japanese one, but already being aware of what a good one tastes like, that was not it. Mushy, bland, cold seafood, including a whole fish with its bones and bowels intact, fish babies, clam soup, frozen vegetables etc. The best dish of all was the warm pot of rice.|If the meals used to be good, I assume the chef has changed.||We asked for some kind of a compensation due to the false advertisement of entertainment, but were blatantly denied. We feel extremely robbed. For comparison: with the same amount of money we were able to book a luxurious room in the 41st floor of Kabukicho tower in Shinjuku Tokyo with a very tasty meal plan.||The staff was friendly, the private onsen was fun and the futons were comfortable, but those are the only pros I can give. Do not book...
Read moreThe best thing I did while I was in Japan. Had a very relaxing stay here in one of the “western style” suites with my brother last week. Rooms are old as mentioned by previous reviews but clean, and tbh I preferred the rustic/homey environment. Really beautiful grounds.
To say that service was fantastic would be an understatement. The place sits on top of a hill and as we got off the bus and headed up, the staff rushed down to grab our bags and checked us in. Same thing when I checked out, I had forgotten an apple pencil and my hat, and the same staff member drove down to the bus stop I was at to get them to me in time! Kana, who was attending our room, was very kind and thoughtful.
The private onsen was everything I ever wanted after 30k steps a day for a week since coming to Japan. Never been so happy to reek of sulphur lol. The bathrooms are stocked with some crazy expensive soaps/cleansers etc (at least here in the states, according to my sister)
Food was (in my opinion) fantastic, it was full of traditional japanese cuisine that I had never had before. Some of the best I had while I was in Japan. I went into it with an open mind but I could understand if some westerners had reservations about the food. A lot of “unusual” seafood compared to what we have in the states. Tuna sashimi was so marbled I mistook it for beef at first, and the roast beef entree was incredibleeeee.
Looking forward to my...
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at Senkyoro in one of the Annexe / Oku no Kigi suites. The suite was very large with seperate dining/living and tatami bedroom. It also had a private outdoor onsen which was amazing and very relaxing, the onsen opened up into the private garden but could be closed with screens for more privacy. The water was hot and milky and made our skin feel great. ||||Our room attendant was a lovely girl who did her best at explaining everything to us in english and served dinner very beautifully and elegantly. It was also very thoughtful that the ryokan took into consideration that I didn't like seafood and customised dinner for me. ||||There is a bus stop right out the front which links you to all major sites (Gora, Togendai, Odawara station and Gotemba if you are coming from Kawaguchiko).||||Try and checkin as early as you can so that you have time to enjoy the grounds and onsen. Our stay was only one night and felt a bit short as dinner takes a few hours. It is worth the money to stay here, especially for the private onsen and lovely service. Everything was clean and amenities were modern....
