As hotel guests at Hakuba Highland Hotel, we had access to the Hakuba Highland Onsen, and it was one of the highlights of our stay. After a day of exploring the area, stepping into the warm, mineral-rich waters was the perfect way to unwind. The onsen facilities were clean, well-maintained, and easy to navigate. What made the experience truly special was the outdoor bath with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Soaking in the hot water while taking in the beautiful alpine scenery was incredibly calming—it felt like the mountains were wrapping us in a warm hug. Whether it was in the cool morning air or under the stars at night, the onsen offered a peaceful and rejuvenating escape for the whole family. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and more connected to the natural beauty of Hakuba. If you’re staying at the hotel, don’t miss the chance to enjoy this lovely onsen—it’s a serene experience that makes the stay even more worthwhile.

Although it’s about 1 km from Hakuba Station, the onsen is located top of a gradual slope, 15-20 mins from the station. The walk there is pleasant walk and surrounded by nature. The onsen itself is simple- one 内湯 and one 露天風呂、the former is relatively small, for about 3-4 people at most. There was no one while I was there on a Friday afternoon so I had the whole 露天風呂 to myself! There is also a sauna but it wasn’t operating due to covid. The water was about 41° so I didn’t stay too long. Entry is ¥800 including ¥100 for the locker which will be refunded to you after your visit. Towels are available for rent/purchase, as well as onsen robe sets for rent. It is part of the Hakuba Highland Hotel so there is also a restaurant there. Opens daily 11:00-20:00.

Our tour arranged us to go onsen there for 2 nights. Yesterday it was great. Today no incoming hot water in the female outdoor onsen therefore the water was not hot. On the other hand, the water was too hot in the male outdoor onsen that no one could get in. At the reception, the manageress pointed to a male staff and said he checks the water temperature for onsen every 30 mins. I doubted how a man can check the female one. Then she went to check and did not come out again before our tour left. Everyone was very disappointed.
