1/5 – Extremely Disappointing and misleading||Unfortunately, our stay at Irodori Guesthouse was extremely disappointing and not at all what we expected for the price charged. It was a shame because our family was really looking forward to this part of our trip.||The listing fails to mention that the bathrooms and toilets are shared. There is one small toilet located directly outside the upstairs bedroom, and the sliding doors to the rooms are paper-thin, do not close properly, and cannot be locked, offering no privacy or security. The second toilet and only bathroom is downstairs, located beside the tiny kitchen and communal area — meaning you have to walk through shared spaces to reach it.||There is also a strict "lights out at 9pm" policy, which is not disclosed in the listing, and to make matters worse, we were not given the access code to re-enter the property. We were locked out when we returned from dinner in Enoshima — an extremely frustrating experience and it took over half an hour to open the door which was stuck.||The futons were very thin and uncomfortable — essentially no more than a duvet on the floor — and far below the standard I’ve experienced elsewhere in Japan, even in budget accommodation.||Due to these issues, we left after the first night and checked into a lovely hotel just off the main shopping street. It was cheaper, far more comfortable, with private bathroom facilities and even an on-site onsen. I’ve stayed in homestays and hostels before, but I’ve never paid such an exorbitant price for such basic accommodation. It is difficult to understand how Irodori justifies charging what it does for what is essentially hostel-level lodging.||I would not recommend this guesthouse — despite our friendly breakfast host, who I didn’t have the heart to tell why we were leaving. I messaged the main host and attempted to complain via Expedia multiple times, but received no reply. The listing is misleading, and the overall experience was unfortunately...
Read moreUnfortunately, this accommodation was not great. I wanted to like it and booked because of the good reviews, but it's really just a low quality hostel type accommodation. Might be OK if you are young and don't mind sleeping on a very thin futon amongst dirt/clutter but for anyone else, just go to an actual hotel. We didn't stay long and I was relieved of because it smelled really musty and mouldy in the room, there was dirt and bugs, and some used tissues in the room. It's pretty noisy and you're at the mercy of other guests who may be wandering around making the floors creak etc.
Also check-in was 4pm which is pretty late. They will keep your bags, but there's no locks anywhere and sometimes no staff so it's not secure - they even tell you you can't leave valuables in the room because it doesn't lock!
The staff are really friendly but for most of the time we were there (i.e. after 4) there was nobody around.
Basically compared to the excellent standard of usual hotels in Japan where you get amenities, cleanliness, 24/7 staffing, this site disappointed me and I...

I had a very concerning experience here checking in. My companion and I arrived at the entrance and opened the door. Inside the common area, there were five or six people sitting together. There was no front desk, and they directly led us to the room. After looking around, we were not satisfied and wanted to leave (shared bathroom, no soundproofing, dirty), but the owner said at the door that you can't cancel. If you cancel, you have to pay a cancellation fee. But I usually pay in advance for hotel reservations, and I have already paid online. He blocked the room entrance anyways and WOULD NOT let us go. The exact wording by him were that ‘you [us] cannot leave like this’, and that ‘it’s unfair to the business’. This left me extremely concerned about my safety. In the end, other staff members told him that we had paid, and he eventually let us go. At least we’re safe now. In conclusion, I wouldn’t recommend this property and definitely not worth its higher price. Go...
