If you’re a gyoza enthusiast, Hida Takayama Gyoza Sohonzan is a must-visit. This spot delivers some of the best gyoza I’ve ever had, with an impressive variety of options that make every bite an exciting experience. Whether you prefer classic styles or unique flavors, the menu offers something for everyone.
From the first bite, it’s clear that the quality and craftsmanship here are top-notch. The dumplings are perfectly crisp on the outside, juicy and flavorful on the inside, expertly balanced and executed. Every dish we ordered exceeded expectations, making it easy to see why this place is so popular.
The chill ambiance inside made for a comfortable dining experience, but be prepared, the wait outside in the cold can be tough. That said, it’s absolutely worth it for the flavors that await. One small critique? They should definitely offer free tap water to guests, which would be a simple yet appreciated touch.
Overall, Hida Takayama Gyoza Sohonzan is an absolute gem for gyoza lovers. If you’re in the area, don’t think twice, just bundle up, brace the wait, and prepare for some of the best dumplings...
Read moreThis place has hands down been my favorite place to eat while staying in Japan for 2 weeks. The staff of two has been exceptional. From an enthusiastic greeting when I entered, to their interest in my travels. I’ll say, I am a white American male traveling solo and with tattoos. As polite as I’ve tried to be (and speaking as much Japanese as I can) I have been turned away at a few places due to either being foreign or having tattoos. Hida Takayama Gyoza Souhonzan made me feel so welcome. They even broke out some funny hats, we took silly photos, and I drew a picture which they already had up on the wall when I came back again for a second visit. Finally, I haven’t mentioned the food. This is the best gyoza I’ve ever had. On my first visit I tried the Hida beef and the spinach, and on the second I tried the fried Hida beef. This will be something I miss when I go back home. I know I’ll be left craving this when I leave, but I can’t...
Read moreCame here and didn't regret it! Ordered the deep-fried Takayama gyoza and Hide beef gyoza (and even received two fried Takayama gyoza as a freebie!) The chef/master was incredibly friendly, kind and conversational, and the restaurant was cute, chill and very cozy.
The food itself was wonderfully tasty--I especially enjoyed the fried Takayama gyoza. The bottom of the gyoza was pan-fried to lightly crispy perfection, each gyoza was generously stuffed and the sweet-sour sauce on top was delectable. You can tell that the master loves what he does and enjoys interacting with and serving his customers--definitely one of my most positive experiences in Takayama.
If you're in the area, come check out this restaurant--I guarantee that you'll leave with a full stomach, warm cozy feelings, and a smile on...
