Tomy Muesli — Restaurant in Takayama

We didn’t like it.

First, it’s not clear from the menu what is vegan, vegetarian or not. After asking the owner, turns out that although they serve bacon, most other dishes are vegan.

The service is slow. It took about 15-20 minutes to get our dish. Then another 15 minutes to wait till we could pay. The owner didn’t greet us and overall seemed quite unwelcoming.

Now for the unpleasant surprise - the famous piece of cake came tiny (see actual photo and the photo from the menu in comparison). It seems the owner just cuts the pieces in half when he’s running low on the cake (needless to mention, the price isn’t cut in half accordingly). Taste is really so-so, for both the mains and the aforementioned cake.

Quite pricey, and unjustifiably so. They also “welcome tips” - did they not notice this is Japan?

To summarize, this place is definitely not up to Japanese standards. I don’t recommend it and won’t be...

We went to Tomy Muesli after trying to get into couple other vegan places in Takayama and it was a good find. The staff understood what vegan was and there were a couple options for us. Overall, great experience. The food was amazing, all the veggies are organically home grown which is a huge bonus, as this is how we try to eat at home, and it's not easy to find when travelling. The dish we had was different from most of the Japanese food we have been having, but it was totemo oishi! We also have amazake matcha on soy milk and vegan strawberry cheesecake. So good! Would definitely recommend this place, especially if looking to support locally produced and home grown veggies! They also had soy bars and muesli balls, all vegan, so we topped up on snacks as well, hence why we spent a bit more here....

We were delighted to find this little cafe. True, the food did take a while to arrive but that's the price you pay for freshly cooked food. I would have given 5 stars but for the rather small piece of vegan pie (I know it was part of a set meal, but it looked bigger in the menu picture). I would have liked to have had my coffee whilst waiting for my food, but I appreciate that others may want it afterwards. The pie and vegan curry were lovely - my son, who is not keen on vegetables, even surprised himself by eating and enjoying them...
