Absolutely delicious food - we ordered the tempura set (Y1,650) and Hida-Beef Steak set (Y2,500) - prepared with love by the male owner. We were the first Asian non-Japanese pair of customers slightly after 5.30pm and the wife welcomed us in after we entered the restaurant. The male boss was deadpanned but in a friendly mood and tried to converse with us in Japanese, but we could only tell him which country we were from. Both him and the wife gave us tips on how to sprinkle the salt for the tempura and use the dips for the Hika beef. The restaurant closes at 8pm so be ready to come here for an early dinner and your first taste of Hida beef in Takayama. The Jap customers/regulars came in after 6pm.

Felt as if I travelled back in time dining in here. It was a quiet Tuesday evening when most restaurants were closed I was struggling finding places to eat and I stumbled across Hashizen in a local neighbourhood not too far from the centre. The chef and his wife were friendly and though they don’t speak English I had no problem ordering as the menu is pretty straightforward. The tempura set which came with a variety of fried veg and prawns is very reasonably priced given the generous amount and freshness of food. Do give it a try if anyone is in town looking for an authentic dining...

This is a great place. Literally a two person operation, done slowly and well. I'm no expert, but their UME set course was more than enough to fill me, and while the proprietor claimed that the sashimi course wasn't great and that I should wait for the tempura, I will say it was all delicious and plentiful - incredibly so for the cost. Please come support this place! The portions are terrific, the food is very good, and the prices are reasonable. Just don't come here in a hurry! Plan to sit and...
