Oyado Yoshinoya is an amazing stay for those who wants to stay a couple of nights on Takayama. Location is amazing and right in the center of city's main activities, 10-15 main walk from JR Takayama station.||Place is run by a elderly couple, with very little english but patience to listen to requests and show the main points of interest to their newcoming guests.||Everything was astonishing clean, room is big for two people and the in-house onsen (family bath with hot spring) make the experience more casual for those afraid to go to a public bath house.||There are only two problems that we found (hence the 4 out 5 score): 1st is the curfew. Doors close at 11pm preventing entrance and exits to the building. This made us lose the amazing Furukawa Night Festival in Hida-Furukawa as it will be not possible to attend given the curfew. The 2nd problems is the fact that this is a guest house more than a ryokan. We were greeted by a 8am coffee by the owner in which he entered the room and opened our curtains and windows, to avoid us getting back to sleep and cause mayhem in their cleaning times. They also lock the doors until 3pm, so you can't freely enter or exit the building during daytime either.||Anyway, those are small problems compared to what Oyado Yoshinoya has to offer. Would stay again on...
Read moreWe stayed in this traditional Ryokan for 2 nights in late july and it was just wonderfull. Upon entering we found out the place was run by an older couple who effectively become your Japanese grandparents during your stay. They would wave us goodbye everytime we left and welcomed us back everytime we returned. They were very apologetic about not being able to speak English very well but between my 5 sentences of Japanese and our collective handgestures we made due very well. They gave us loads of tips about the town. Speaking of the town, the location is an absolute dream. The Ryokan was smack in the middle of the historic centre with great places to get very nice souvenirs from artisans. It is also a 5 minute walk from the morning market which was very great and I would highly recommend getting up early to explore. The rooms came with a set of Yukata and were very well maintained. You also get access to the onsen for free which was very clean and relaxing after a long day of exploring. All in all you can tell that these people care very much about their ryokan and the guests that come to visit and I would recommend anyone coming to Takayama to stay here.

Read moreThis was the perfect place to try a ryokan-like experience. I'm not certain if it's a traditional ryokan, but we slept on futon in tatami mat rooms with sliding doors. There are two onsen that can be locked for privacy since they are shared with the rest of the rooms. Couples/families are encouraged to bathe together to be considerate on the other guests waiting to bathe. Each room has a heat/AC unit, and very warm comforters (we stayed in mid November, and it was cold outside!).
There are some rules: onsen bathing rooms and exterior doors close/lock at 10pm, and they take your room key each time you leave the premises. I also believe you cannot enter the premises between 10am and 3pm. There are communal sinks in the hallways (near the toilets) to wash your face and brush your teeth.
The owners are very kind and generous. They bring coffee to your room around 7:30am, and provide tea or hot water in the afternoons.
Great little place! So glad we stayed. We visited Shirakawa-go, and used Oyado Yoshinoya as our home base...
