Lets start with the positives: Excellent Staff and Service. Also roomservice was good and clean. Bathroom had proper space for utencils. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Decent internet connection with around 50Mbit DL and 25Mbit UL.
Usually I don't review hotels, they're usually within expectation at the price point and there will always be some minor details which could be better, but i don't enjoy beeing nitpicky and some things just happen, so i usually don't really care about them.
But at mesm it were so many little details that I got annoyed enough to even write my first review. We've booked the lowest room category at this hotel for 3 nights at the end of our trip, we do this sometimes to see if we want to stay there for longer the next time we visit.
This hotel is a bit different from others, it adds a few art pieces, a piano and some other small things in the room, which i think is a nice idea. But they forgot about all the basics:
There's only 1 medium drawer and 10 coathangers for clothes, no real space for any amount of suitcases, bags or other luggage. No hangers in the entryway for jackets or anything else. No space to put (old) clothes at the end of the day. The bathroom (toilet) door is so thin there's only visual privacy, everything else you could hear through the room. No soap for washing hands in the toilet room. The room door was also quite thin, so everytime neighbors talked in the hallway you could clearly hear them. The shortest and smallest main towels we've ever had in any Hotel. Quite low water pressure in the shower. Super flimsy hairdryer. In a room for 2 People (2 queen sized beds) had 1 proper chair and a ottomann (which could be used as chair, but very uncomfortable), so spending more than 30 minutes in the room sitting together was uncomfortable for at least one of us. The TV is ALWAYS on when you return to the room, so first thing you always do is look for the remote to turn it off. You get 2 Beds, but only one small nightstand in between with a big phone on it so you can't really put anything there. Speaking of beds, if the AC is on it blows right in your face in the bed closer to the AC, which is a bit too much even on low. At the "desk" in front of the bed there are a few outlets, which is great, but they're between the desk and the wall above, so no space for any kind of adapter. So you have to use another one near the bottom, but it's so loose that with a adapter it's barely hanging on (which then exposes the live prongs). No extra paper-towels in the room.
Here are some more things i would change if i could:
Remove the bear at the room entrance and put it somewhere in the hallway, it's only interesing once and from then on it only takes away space. Use the space for shoe shelfes and a little seat to put shoes on or off. Remove the fake suitcases and make space for actual suitcases. Put a small cabinet with drawers in front of the beds. This gives some seperated space for clothes. Free (reusable) water bottles. In every other hotel we stayed at we got free water bottles which we could take with us when exploring the city or use for the night besides the bed etc.. Nespresso machine: This was the only hotel in a long time which had not a nespresso machine. The drip coffee is nice and all, but not nearly as convenient. Add a heavy curtain between the actual room and the entryway. This would reduce noises from the hallway and from the thin...
Read moreStayed as a long-term guest at Mesm in the Daimon area of Tokyo.
Rooms: 4/5 Location: 3/5 Facilities: 2/5 Staff service: 1/5
Overall 2/5
Rooms: Excellent rooms with amazing views of Hamariku Gardens - if you're able to get a room facing it. Newly furnished and spacious. Excellent balcony for some rooms. Only downside is that there is not proper chair to do serious work on - you only have a sofa, which is admittedly, quite comfortable.
Location: Great if you are heading to Ginza area (or the fish market); Or if you are heading to work around the Daimon area. Apart from that it's about a 10 min walk to the train station and about 20 mins from other places like Shinjuku. This means to say that I'll likely pick another area if I'm a first-time tourist to Tokyo and hitting the more famous spots.
Facilities: Good bar with live music and performances almost every night. Gym is half-par with very limited equipment, with weights topping out at 22kg for barbells. Had much better experiences at other Marriott properties (e.g., Edition has a pool), Hyatt (overall PH, GH, Andaz are just a much better hotel in Tokyo compared to Mesm), or Conrad (just across the gardens).
Staff service: This is where I think the Mesm has some way to go to learn and improve to catch-up with hotels I'll consider of a similar ilk. To be objective, here are some of the things I've noticed: Requesting for items requires a much longer wait time than other hotels (experienced 60+ mins wait when asking for water, or plates, for example), inability to provide some devices for long-term guests (e.g., microwaves - I find this acceptable if you're here for 1-2 days, but when you're here 1+ month, maybe there should be some flex), charge associated with water (capped at 4 250ml bottles a day, then it's 400 yen each), mixed treatment of elite members (e.g., difficulty in getting room upgrades - was told none was available until I proved to them with screenshots that their website showed it was available, and then was upgraded - but required an unnecessary 1 hour back-and-forth), and just in general, lack of flexibility (e.g., required weekly payments / check-outs which front desk attributed to Amex's requirements, but turns out Amex had no such requirements), in general, I think there a mindset of saying "No - we cannot do this because [insert some policy / other company] to blame", regardless is that makes sense or is even true (e.g., the Amex rule was just some dishonest thing from the staff. For a hotel that aspires to do well, I feel like the general mindset should instead be more honest, flexible, and service-oriented - that is what truly distinguished the great hotels from the good. I'll leave it to you to decide after reading this - I feel like most are acceptable things - but I've not experienced this in other hotels I've stay around Tokyo, given the impeccable service standards in this city!
I do sincerely hope the service levels in the hotel improves soon! If you're fine with this being a tier 2 hotel, then you can ignore my comments above, but I feel like this hotel has the potential to be an outstanding tier 1 hotel - but currently leaves some room...

Plus, their cheerfulness, service and wonderful knowledge was world-class.||||We loved our well appointed room with its amazing view over Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River, especially the night view. Moreover, thank you for all the welcome gifts. A Star Embassy member brought us up to our room and played piano. The refrigerator drinks were replenished daily. Your tablet video gave great instructions on use of the slow-brew coffee pot. Your Restaurant is amazing for breakfast and dinners and complimentary lobby entertainment is MESMerizing.||||Day 1 Your location was great our first day to walk about the Imperial Palace, Gardens and Ponds and the Hama-Riku Gardens and Nakajima Tea House. Thank you so very much to the MESM Hotel Star Embassy Team who organized this amazing day. Our Chauffeur/Guide "Roberto" Masaaki Ichimura expertly and safely navigated us to Hakone Owakundani Station for views of Mount Fuji, the Sulfur Springs and of course to eat kuro-tamago (black eggs). From there, Roberto placed us on the Hakone Ropeway down to Togendai Station. Next, he met us at Togendai to move us onto the Pirate Ship across Lake Ashi. From there, he took us to explore Odawara Castle Tower, Samurai and Ninja Halls. Onto a beautiful drive along the coast line to Kamakara. Once there, he took us into the Kotoku-in (Great Buddha) and the Hasedera Temple. And, he found a nice lunch in Kamakura. He returned us into Tokyo with time to walk and observe the Shibuya Crossing, visit the Tokyo Tower, drive through the Ginza District and more! We are grateful to our Chauffeur/Guide and the MESM Hotel Star Embassy Team who made all the arrangements.||||Day 3 With the MESM Hotel Star Embassy team's explanation of the 2 nearby piers and schedules - we enjoyed the Tokyo Cruise from Hinode Pier to Asakusa. In Asakusa, we learned from the Ninja/Samurai Museum, were amazed with a Rickshaw Ride and visited the Senso-ji Temple. Caught the Tokyo Cruise back to Hinode Pier. And, we returned in time for a lobby dinner to enjoy the Lobby Entertainment.||||Day 4 With the rain, we Uber'd to Ryogoku instead of taking the the Waters Takeshiba water bus. In Ryogoku, we had the honor of attending Sumo Wrestler Training at the Nakamura-beya Sumo Stable. We arranged it through Nexspark (dot) jp. Thank you to your Star Embassy Megumi Sarutaor for selecting a perfect restaurant Asakusa Imahan for its location and avoidance of my food allergies. From there to the Asakusa Kaguwa Caberet. This one-hour show was amazing, but it actually began an hour ahead. We bought the Premier seat to include a comfortable sofa, photos before the show, visits with the performers, and cocktails. And, we returned in time for the late Lobby Entertainment.||||Thank you again for a fabulous...
