The night before we stayed at a traditional ryokan in Aso (Shinwaen) so this might have affected our judgment but the lack of service in comparison made it a disappointing stay.||We arrived early having walked about 12 minutes from the station and were told we could not check in until 3pm which was fine, so we left our luggage and walked back into town.||We returned a few hours later but were told we couldn't check in until we had paid in full IN CASH for the night's stay upfront. Luckily we just had enough money to do this or we'd have had to have walked back into town to the nearest ATM at 7/11. Why do so few places take credit cards in Japan?||This ryokan is modern. It had the air of a university halls of residence. Spotlessly clean but rather sterile and clinical.||The room was quite large and had a washbasin but for anything else it was a walk along the corridor or downstairs to the onsen.||No service. You have to make your own beds up.||Breakfast was minimal and self-service again. Coffee/tea, some bread and boiled eggs were laid out in a room with a nice view of the mountain and countryside. There was no dinner option so you need to walk into town again.||We felt it had a lot of potential if additional service was offered but it was expensive for what we received especially compared to our previous...
Read moreAwesome view of the towering mountains up ahead, especially so when you wake up to the scenic backdrop. Yukata and haori are provided in the rooms which is appreciated, however, I was the only one wearing it to breakfast TT. The main highlight, the onsen baths, were relaxing and quite private too as there are 7(?) rooms in total and 3 male pools and 3 female pools so you will likely get to enjoy the onsens privately. The limited room capacity also meant that there was never a time when I had to wait to use the shared showers or bathrooms, which in fact were empty most of the times I used them.
Staff were helpful and spoke English. Only complaint is that it is inaccessible on foot, I had to drag my luggage the bumpy roads uphill along the drains since there were no footpaths. Recommended to get a taxi if...
Read moreThe Ryokan is a very friendly Hotel. The people are so helpful. We had an own small house with a private onsen. From the first minute we felt at home. It’s a very quiet area so you can relax and enjoy your stay. The location is not central so you need to walk to along a street which was not so nice. We have on our stay a great breakfast and every day other dishes. Keep in mind, if you have a room make sure to make a reservation at the restaurant for dinner at least one week bevor. They don’t have the capacity for all the guests to eat dinner. With a reservation at the Ryokan doesn’t change nothing which was a downside for us and a...
