Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites — Hotel in Borneo

I would like to share my experience 3 days 2 night at Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites, right infront Padang Merdeka. You can just walk to Borneo Cultural Museum, Open Air Market, Merdeka Plaza/Tun Jugah shopping complex, India Street, Old Court House, Jambatan Darul Hana, Floating Mosque, China town, Waterfront and many more good attractions in Kuching.

I check in on 31/7 until 2/8. My room is 326 if im not mistaken. The lobby is outstanding, check in process also very good. So i came in to the room and i found very strong cigarette smell in the room and the air-cond also very slow. I cannot feel the air-cond. I try to stay for one hour plus then i try to call Receptionist but very sad the room phone not working. So i have to go down to inform the Receptionist. Right after that i go back to my room. A few minutes later the Maintenance guy cominng checking the air-cond and he said the blower very dusty. I ask him how you can leave thr blower dusty while you know there will be guest check in later. The Maintenance guy blaming morning staff didnt do the cleaning. I have no idea how not very competent the service. The housekeeping coming spray the room, the carpet and the smell slowly disappeared. I wonder too why Housekeeping did not check this room as this room got guest will come check in. Well, the problem settle but come another problem. When i take bath, the water clogged and very surpise got cigarette but appeared from the toilet hole. Since the room phone is not working, i have to come down again inform the Receptionist and the Receptionist straight away give me another room which is Room 331. I move to the room immediately.

The day i check out i ordered Special fried rice and drinks at Seattle Coffee House. The service and food just good.

This hotel have own majestic but well known. I hope this hotel management can take further steps to improve the condition of the room and all related.

How come you can sale room with strongly cigarette smell, phone room not working, air-cond very slow not feel the air-cond, the bath room clogged got cigarette butt to guest ? No body double check the room before you sell it...

The place is in bad shape and does not look like it has been renovated at all since it opened more than 20 years ago. Definitely does not deserve a high rating.

The staff tried their best to help, but they can only do so much without renovating the whole place.

Originally was supposed to have a smaller room, but they were out of space and gave my family a free upgrade to the 2 bedroom 3 bathroom suite.

Was happy at first, but realised that the 'suite' had furniture that was chipped and peeling, sofa was stained, paint was peeling, ceiling had dark water marks, curtains had lipstick on it and were frayed at the edges (doesnt look like its been changed since the hotel opening), bedsheets were clean with no bedbugs but were a bit frayed at the edges too.

There were also too many mirrors. Full length mirrors on every bathroom door, and others around the suite. The bed is facing the bathroom mirror, so you will sleep while seeing your own reflection. Just moving around a place with so many mirrors, you tend to get startled when you see yours or your companions' reflection out of the corner of your eye.

Even when it was sunny outside, i felt the need to on every light switch and machine (tv, fridge, etc) that i could find. By night time, the atmosphere was too bad that we insisted on changing rooms. We were given a smaller suite on a lower floor, and the atmosphere was immediately better. However, the walls still had paint peeling from it.

There seems to be alot of weird angles and dark corners in regards to the structure of the hotel rooms. The smaller suite seemed to belong to a part of the hotel that had curved walls. So the entrance of the suite was wider, but the back of the suite becomes a smaller room.

Almost changed hotels. Would have given up on the room refund if need be. Its just that it was too late to find another hotel that made us make do with the...

Dear all, please think twice before you book this hotel. I’m really disappointed to booked this hotel for 4 nights stay. This hotel is really old and didn’t well maintained! This hotel at least 25 years ago, and I don’t agreed with this 4 star hotel rate because due to some 4 star standard didn’t meet…for example slipper in the room and laundry bag from this hotel!

I requested to change room for me every day since I booked for 4 nights they agreed me at the beginning and didn’t informed their staff for next day. The staff rejected me. They should have a better communication between their staff. The staff told me she can’t make decisions and needs to check with the boss. After checking with owner Malay boss instruction staff do not allow this to this client.

1st night stay: the toilet is floated and the pipe is leaking that’s the no way to really close and stop this issue!

2nd night stay: the phone cable is loosen and can’t contact receptionist and the toilet flash can’t working properly.

3rd night stay: they hair dryer not working well and no hit at all and the aircon also. Until night time I shower because very hot and I proceed to counter change room again.

4th night stay: The bed sheet is dirty stained and yellowish in color and the wall cable is not working. One room only has 3 socket of plug spoiled. Another thing is I also helping my colleague to book this Merdeka Palace Hotel as well and my colleagues also feedback the wall plug is not working.

This is the bad experience for me to stay here and I need to tolerate myself for 4 nights and they don’t do refund or cancellation.

This is the worst hotel I ever stay and I won’t be coming back and recommend to friends. I am so angry with these unreasonable excuses they provide.
