My second stay in the hotel - the first was 2018. So it has been awhile. Came here to stay for only a night with elderly parents. Chose the hotel back for its location and their availability for connecting rooms.
Got to stay the room is dated. Mirror in bathroom has smeared of rust. Carpet looked old and mouldy. But no funky smell thank goodness.
There is a difference in service though - we checked in at 3pm with a young Malay lady and a Chinese man. The lady was polite, the man whom I presume is higher ranked than her was curt. Polite but curt.
My dad is 81 years old and have trouble to walk and when we asked if we could get a bread up to him the next day, he simply say no. Hotel policy. That's fine. We bought bread for him.
In the evening when we came back to the hotel though, a kind Malay man worker who was watering theplant outside on seeing my dad, immediately came to assist him up the hotel steps and offered us a wheelchair. When my dad declined, man kindly offer to assist him up the lift to our room with my sister while I went to the back of hotel to park my car. I wish I got his name so I could thank him, but I didnt manage to get it. Compare to the afternoon check-in staff who saw my dad struggle, catching his breath from the few steps up and did nothing, he was a gem. A lack of empathy I'll say. The man was not rude, just lacking of empathy. I would not knw the hotel offered wheelchair assistance to its guest if not for the Malay worker.
The next day breakfast was standard for hotel of this size. Ayam masak merah, Chinese porridge, CKT, omelette, pancake and bread. My mom asked the lady attending if we could bring up 2 slices of bread up for my elderly dad (despite me having asked and denied of it the day before during check in), and the Malay lady immediately say yes and even told her to put them on a plate to bring it up instead of tissue, and the housecleaning staff will collect it from our room later. How considerate! Thank you. It was not much, but it meant a lot in the hospitality industry to have a heart of service...

Starcity Hotel needs no introduction to Kedahans, having been a prominent presence in Alor Setar for nearly two decades. My recent stay was especially meaningful, as it brought back memories of the last time I was here, 10 years ago with my late father during Ramadhan. That visit left a lasting impression and I’m glad to say the hotel has maintained its charm and quality.
The hotel remains impressively well-maintained, which is rare in Alor Setar where many hotels are aging and in need of refurbishment. We stayed for two nights for my niece's wedding reception, which was held at the Grand Ballroom last weekend.
From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. The staff were courteous and welcoming, from the entrance concierge to the front desk. Special mention goes to Aqilah, whose warm smile greeted us from morning to afternoon. Truly a gem in hospitality.
One of the highlights of our stay was the food. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and affordability of the room service. The fried mee and fried chicken were absolutely delicious, possibly the best and most reasonably priced hotel meal I’ve ever had.
Starcity Hotel, please continue maintaining your excellent standards. The memories and photos displayed in the lobby, featuring prominent figures who have stayed there, speak volumes about your legacy and service. Kudos...
