Had a very poor experience overall at HIG Hotel Langkawi, would recommend dining there but would NOT recommend staying or going anywhere beyond the ground floor. We arrived in the night (30th March 2025) and there was a sorry excuse for a receptionist there who clearly had little experience as a receptionist or the hotel. This hotel was not classed/listed as a budget hotel but once you leave the lobby and dining area; that is exactly what it is.
The booking was paid for in full via Agoda but they required a room deposit (refundable) and another additional (non-re-fundable) payment upon arrival (they said it was tax; but Agoda already had a tax component? I have not experienced such before on booking through Agoda in any other country).
The electronic key is faulty; inserted it in multiple directions several times, it did not work, went downstairs and asked, they gave another; that also took like 10 attempts to open (I am not new to contact-less or slip-in electronic key cards). Got used to this after a while because the hotel also seems to know but not care, likely related to the faulty Wi-Fi in the hotel
The room was quite spacious and clean without smells although quite dated with the skin peeling of the chairs etc.
The bathroom bidet spray/shower in the room had no head, just a hose with the head removed; when I complained, someone came and fixed but following morning; discovered that in the dining room; both toilets are the same; no spray head, just hose with the empty screw on so you need to open close the valves risking water all over you.
Both showers (telephone shower as well as rain shower) are leaking around the heads so you need to commit to a bath if you go in there because water s spraying all over. (Water pressure was good and there was hot water).
The air conditioning in the room is making loud vibrations when you turn it to a medium setting, so that you need to turn it up all the way enduring the noise for a short while, then turn it to minimum to reduce the noise and fall asleep fast before room heats up again; a very old AC unit hanging outside the room window.
WiFi is advertised but is a joke. It appears once in a way but disappears quickly so you need to use phone hotspots; when speaking to the night receptionist (7 floors below); he was like ‘Oh it is fine where I am sitting’ but following day when I complained to the receptionist on duty, she was like ‘Ah yes, our WiFi is bad’. I mean, really? This attitude; is it a hotel or a motel/rest house?
There is no one to assist you with the bags; they were like ‘Oh we have no one to do that, you need to take them up, bring them down’ (okay, this part is okay considering the standard of other things).
They list ‘safety deposit box’ but there was nothing like that in the room, so had to carry valuable all around when traveling
The dining room is clean and had a decent selection of food and the staff were also good; the only positive thing about the hotel apart from the fact that it is walking distance from the town.
I would never return here if in Langkawi and would not recommend to anyone to stay except maybe visit for breakfast. The location and building with views etc is good and could actually do great with renovation and an entirely new management (wtithout the current staff who acknowledge all issues as 'ah...
Read moreWent here for a 3-night stay with my mother along with my mother's best friend's family. Here are my personal thoughts and opinions about the hotel:
The room I got, located on 5th Floor facing the sea, was OK. The sea view from the 5th floor was good, as I can see the MAHA Tower from my room. It has the basic amenities, which includes an electric kettle and also, coffee and tea. Not only that, there's even a prayer mat, Qiblat direction, and a Quran placed above the counter, in keeping with the hotel's Islamic theme. As for the TV, other than the 12 channels listed, there's also the hotel's TV channel which showed room service menu and Muslim prayer times.
The room's air-conditioning has a problem, where it was not cold enough. The maintenance man did some light repairs to it and suggested a temporary solution: Keeping the air-conditioning switched on without switching it off. The temporary solution worked, and our room feels cold as it should. As for the bed, one of the pillows provided was old and needs replacing.
Inside the bathroom, there were the included amenities such as toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and shower gel, and shaving kit, but there was no hairdryer. Still, it's OK, as it has the hand-held bidet and hot shower. In fact, the shower also has a tap made for ablution (wudhu).
Now onto the cafeteria. The food and drinks served were good. While the cafeteria looks clean, there's just one problem: cockroaches! In all of our three days of having breakfast, there were some cockroach nymphs found at the cafeteria. In fact, my mother told one of the staffs there and also showed them the cockroach nymphs. Honestly, the cafeteria needs an urgent pest control here.
Finally, what's best about this hotel is none other than the Perniagaan Haji Ismail Group shopping outlet located just beside the hotel. Here, hotel residents can buy chocolates (my personal favourite!), dinnerware, and luggage. There's also the bazaar located outside, where residents can dine and also buy some souvenirs.
Overall, my experience here was OK and I rate...
Read moreMy recent stay at HIG Hotel Langkawi was a mixed experience, leading to a 3-star rating.
The rooms at the hotel were average, receiving a 3-star rating. While they provided the basic necessities, I found the decor and amenities to be somewhat outdated and in need of improvement.
Similarly, the service offered by the hotel staff also merited a 3-star rating. While they were polite and responsive, I noticed some areas where their attentiveness could have been enhanced to create a more memorable guest experience.
On the upside, the hotel's location was a positive aspect, earning a 4-star rating. It was conveniently situated in close proximity to various attractions, making it easy to explore the beauty of Langkawi.
However, one of the areas that fell short was the value for money, which I rated as 2 stars. I felt that the overall quality of the hotel did not quite justify the rates charged, leaving me somewhat dissatisfied with my investment.
Furthermore, the maintenance of the property received a 2-star rating. I noticed several areas where the hotel could benefit from better upkeep and attention to detail, which affected the overall ambiance.
In conclusion, my experience at HIG Hotel Langkawi was average, with aspects of both satisfaction and disappointment. While the location was convenient and the service was acceptable, the value for money and maintenance could use some improvement. If you prioritize convenience in your stay and are willing to overlook some shortcomings, this hotel might still be worth considering.
Hope...
